Negativity? Just Say No!
Wednesday, October 28 | 3PM Eastern (live) or On-Demand
$50 for NENA Members | $85 for Non-Members

We already know that working in a 9-1-1 center is stressful. When people call 9-1-1, it’s not usually because they are having a good day. We accept that. But what we shouldn't have to accept is co-workers who cause us more stress because of their negative attitudes and behaviors. Are you ready to take the steps necessary to build a more positive and productive workplace and deal with those who make your work-life miserable? If so, join us for this interactive webinar where we’ll discuss:
  • What negativity is,
  • How negative people and environments affect us,
  • Ideas to help us and our coworkers build and maintain positive attitudes, and
  • Why it is everyone’s responsibility to build a more positive environment.
Can't attend on the 28th? Register now and you will receive an email after the live presentation with instructions for accessing the on-demand webinar archive.

Webinar Access Info
Dial-in and web-access details will be provided to attendees via email the week of the webinar.

Deploying NG9-1-1 Call Taking Solutions: What You Need to Know
Sponsored by Motorola & Emergency CallWorks
Tuesday, November 10 | 1PM Eastern (live) or On-Demand
Free! Click here to register!

As PSAPs seek to deploy Next Generation 9-1-1 call taking capabilities, sending texts, photos, and videos to 9-1-1 is no longer a distant reality. As the availability of text-to-9-1-1 in the U.S., continues to grow, the expectation that public safety agencies will be able to use the same technology that citizens use every day to communicate has never been higher. However, there is a lot of confusion with how it works, who is responsible and what is necessary to achieve a successful deployment of text-to-9-1-1 in the public safety environment.

During this webinar, we will address key questions including the operational impacts of integrating text into a PSAP’s incident management workflow. Additionally, we will demonstrate how text can be configured to help you handle calls faster, allocate resources better and keep your community safer.

Presenters:
Trey Forgety, Director of Government Affairs, NENA
Carol Adams, Stafford County Communications Director
Dan Sawicki, Director of Product Management, Motorola Solutions

Can't attend on the 10th? Register now and you will have access to the on-demand webinar archive via the registration landing page.

NENA: Tell us a little bit about who you are, where you’re from, what you do, and your history with NENA....

Blake Govan: My name is Blake Govan and I have been a Police Dispatcher for Wayne State University Police Department in Detroit, Michigan, for 4 years. I have also been a member of NENA for 4 years and this year was a first time attendee at 9-1-1 Goes to Washington in February and the national NENA conference in June.

NENA: Why did you choose a career in public safety?

BG: My uncle gave me one of his old police scanners and from the day I started listening to it, I became addicted. My curiosity arose after listening to police and fire calls being dispatched day in and day out. I reached out to my local 9-1-1 Center and arranged for a sit-along with the dispatchers to gain more of an insight on what the job entails. From then on, I set my sights on becoming a 9-1-1 Dispatcher. I furthered my education by attending a 9-1-1 Dispatch Academy and obtained certifications to help with securing a dispatch position.

OPS UPDATE
NENA currently supports an NG9-1-1 Security (NGSEC) Working Group (WG). This group has delivered several documents defining how to protect NG9-1-1 Core Services (NGCS) and PSAPs from malicious and non-malicious attacks. Those efforts have proven useful in early NG9-1-1 deployments.

The next efforts of this Working Group will include documenting "Cybersecurity Playbooks" for various levels of 9-1-1/public safety participants, identifying best practices, and supporting training and education.

NENA welcomes interested members to participate in the NG9-1-1 Security Working Group. Participation is open to NENA members who have a strong interest in or experience in this issue and we encourage members from both technical and operational perspectives. We also welcome NENA members who currently serve other NENA Working Groups such as i3 architecture, ESInet design, and PSAP ops.

Meetings will start in the next month. Click here to join this WG. For questions, please contact Brian Knueppel

A new Class of Service Working Group has been organized to address changes that may be required within NENA documents to support emerging call types and the appropriate Class of Service (COS) values to identify them.  The WG will begin, initially, on a review of COS within the context of E9-1-1 and recommend changes to impacted NENA documentation.  Once complete with this initial process, the WG will then consider the importance of COS within the context of NG9-1-1 and recommend any changes to relevant NG9-1-1 documentation.

The NG9-1-1 Call Processing Metrics Working Group is creating a NENA standard that specifies NG9-1-1 processing metrics. These metrics are traditionally considered to be defined time spans between pairs of processing events that can be used in reporting and analysis. Examples would be the time between two steps in call processing, or the time between a database query and the received response.

Skills needed include:
  • PSAP and dispatch operations management experience
  • Familiarity with i3 architecture
  • Experience designing Public Safety call handling technology
  • Experience writing technical standards

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
Recognizing the need for comprehensive 9-1-1 system funding reform as 9-1-1 evolves, the National 911 Program has begun work to develop a report to assess the costs, service requirements and specifications needed for NG9-1-1.

The National 911 Program will  gather feedback from the 9-1-1 stakeholder community to address the focal areas of the report, including:
  • How costs would be broken out geographically and allocated among PSAPs, broadband service providers, and third-party providers of NG9-1-1 services
  • An assessment of the current state of NG911 service readiness among PSAPs
  • How differences in PSAP access to broadband across the U.S. may affect costs
  • A technical analysis and cost study of different delivery platforms, such as wireline, wireless and satellite
  • An analysis of the needs for NG9-1-1 services of persons with disabilities
The report will be completed within the next two years. For further questions about this report or the National 911 Program, please contact Program Coordinator Laurie Flaherty.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (Bureau) announces the opening of its Public Safety Support Center (PSSC), a web-based, one-stop portal to enable Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and other Public Safety entities to request support or information from the Bureau and to notify it of problems or issues impacting the provision of emergency services. The PSSC is available here.

A principal goal of the Bureau is to ensure consistent and timely support to public safety stakeholders. The development of the PSSC is the latest step by the Bureau to fulfill this goal. The PSSC will handle notifications of service outages, complaints related to carrier provision of location information, and register issues, or submit inquiries regarding PSAP or Public Safety operations or FCC rules and regulations.
