NENA's Center Manager Certification Program (CMCP) is designed to equip recently hired, newly promoted, and aspiring PSAP and 9-1-1 Authority managers and supervisors with the tools needed to effectively manage their agency through a rigorous 40-hour course of lecture and lab-based education. For more seasoned 9-1-1 professionals, the CMCP may serve to fill in some of the gaps and strengthen core competencies required in emergency communications center management.

The CMCP, unlike many other upper-level emergency communications training programs, utilizes a real-world, hands-on approach that is focused on topics encountered daily by managerial and supervisory level personnel: Business Writing, Financial Management, Human Resources, Legal Issues, and Communications Skills. With a curriculum built by current and former 9-1-1 center managers with decades of combined supervisory and training experience, the program will provide you with knowledge and skills that can immediately and drastically improve your on-the-job effectiveness and enhance your agency's everyday operations.

Register for the upcoming CMCP:

OPS UPDATE
The NENA Information Document for Handling Text-to-9-1-1 in the PSAP is intended to provide a guideline for PSAPs with recommendations for emergency calling to 9-1-1 using text messaging.

As the ever-changing evolution of technology is advancing, it introduces numerous challenges in processing the new means of communication for emergency services. The nation’s telecommunicators have done an excellent job in processing verbal 9-1-1 calls for service. Non-verbal communications will establish additional challenges to overcome when it comes to processing additional data. With that comes unique challenges in the validity of the 9-1-1 call along with the proper format in processing the data stream. This document will address those issues and offer proper guidelines in processing 9-1-1 calls for service.

Chrysler Group LLC recently announced that, as part of its new suite of connected services called Uconnect® Access, select vehicles now come equipped with a built-in data connection as well as a 9-1-1 button on the rear-view mirror. Occupants in vehicles with Uconnect Access can push the 9-1-1 button to connect to the appropriate PSAP who can dispatch responders to an accident scene, if necessary.

This bulletin does not represent an NENA endorsement of the Chrysler product. NENA’s only intent in distributing this information is in ensuring that our membership, and public safety in general, have as much information as possible regarding a new service which will impact PSAP operations and personnel.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
The Pew Charitable Trusts is looking for a dynamic individual to launch and run their new Next Generation 9-1-1 initiative. The initiative will have three primary objectives that, if met, would position states to move expeditiously and wisely on important policy reforms: (1) Raise the profile of Next Generation 9-1-1 so that policy makers at all levels of government understand the benefits of modernizing the system and the consequences of failing to act; (2) Help state leaders gain a better understanding of the costs of moving to Next Generation 9-1-1 and how to fund the transition and ongoing implementation; and (3) Give lawmakers access to policy-relevant, user-friendly information — including best practices used by other states — and credible experts and resources in the field. For more information, please review the position description or contact Andrew Zalman, Senior Executive Recruiter, at azalman@pewtrusts.org or 202.540.6618.
