 9-1-1 Goes to Washington (#NENAGTW) brings you and hundreds of your fellow 9-1-1 professionals together with government leaders in our nation's capital to address today's most pressing 9-1-1 and emergency communications issues. #NENAGTW is the only event where you learn about the policy challenges facing 9-1-1 and then take immediate action to address them through dialogue with your elected and appointed officials.

#NENAGTW offers you a significant opportunity to shape the nation’s emergency communications policy agenda. In order to address the needs of today’s 9-1-1 systems while laying the regulatory and legislative groundwork for next-generation systems, you must understand today’s 9-1-1 policy landscape and take an active role in educating policymakers to shape the laws and rules of tomorrow. At #NENAGTW, you will do both. Join us for a dynamic, interactive program where you receive:

The inside information you need to shape the 9-1-1 and emergency communications agendas for the Administration and Congress;

  • Critical knowledge of federal and state 9-1-1, homeland security, and emergency communications legislation, regulation, and policy initiatives; and
  • An opportunity to speak directly with members of Congress, administration officials, and key staff to make your voice heard on behalf of the entire 9-1-1 community.
Reminder about planning your Hill meetings
As we are getting closer to #NENAGTW, please don’t forget to ask for meetings with your Congressional offices while you’re in DC on February 27 – 28. NENA is aware that the Senate will be in town, but the House will not be in session during those dates. However, that does not mean you shouldn’t ask for a meeting with legislative staff. In fact, meeting with legislative staff is just as important as meeting directly with your Member of Congress. Though meeting with Members is still advantageous, much of the legislation in DC is handled by staff, and it’s important to educate them on the issues and challenges facing the 9-1-1 community, and federal funding. Please keep that in mind when making your invites and we look forward to seeing you in Washington soon!

Document Announcements

The NENA Spoofing Mitigation Information Document describes the application of the Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs (SHAKEN) caller identity spoofing mitigation framework and SIP Resource-Priority Header and Priority header signing/verification procedures to 9 1 1 calls and emergency callbacks in an end-state Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) (i.e., all-Internet Protocol [IP]) environment as well as caller identity spoofing mitigation mechanisms applicable to an all-Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and mixed TDM/IP environment, with a focus on associated operational impacts and considerations. This Information Document also describes location spoofing mitigation in an end-state NG9-1-1 environment.

Washington Briefing

Thanks to you, telecommunicator reclassification legislation is gaining momentum in Congress! Senators have introduced the Enhancing First Response Act (S. 3556), a companion bill to the House's 911 SAVES Act (H.R. 6319).

Click here now to help NENA fight for reclassification by urging your members of Congress in both houses to support these bills! It'll take less than five minutes of your time.

This legislative effort would reclassify Public Safety Telecommunicators as a "Protective Service Occupation" in the federal government's Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. The SOC currently categorizes 9-1-1 professionals as "Office and Administrative Support," which is based on an outdated, misinformed view of the essential, life-saving work performed by telecommunicators and it must be changed.

Click here to ask your Representative and Senators to support reclassification and help the 100,000 telecommunicators in our country get the respect they deserve.

Achieve Public Safety Grade GIS Data
GeoComm®
Our recommended steps involve assessing, improving, maintaining, and sharing your GIS data to fulfill its mission critical role in current and future 9-1-1 systems. These steps are also important in enabling 9-1-1 calls to spatially route to the appropriate Emergency Communications Center (ECC) in a NG9-1-1 environment.
