9-1-1 Goes to Washington (#NENAGTW) brings you and hundreds of your fellow 9-1-1 professionals together with government leaders in our nation's capital to address today's most pressing 9-1-1 and emergency communications issues. #NENAGTW is the only event where you learn about the policy challenges facing 9-1-1 and then take immediate action to address them through dialogue with your elected and appointed officials.

#NENAGTW offers you a significant opportunity to shape the nation’s emergency communications policy agenda. In order to address the needs of today’s 9-1-1 systems while laying the regulatory and legislative groundwork for next-generation systems, you must understand today’s 9-1-1 policy landscape and take an active role in educating policymakers to shape the laws and rules of tomorrow. At #NENAGTW, you will do both. Join us for a dynamic, interactive program where you receive:

 The inside information you need to shape the 9-1-1 and emergency communications agendas for the Administration and Congress;

  • Critical knowledge of federal and state 9-1-1, homeland security, and emergency communications legislation, regulation, and policy initiatives; and
  • An opportunity to speak directly with members of Congress, administration officials, and key staff to make your voice heard on behalf of the entire 9-1-1 community.

November 1 – November 3, 2023, NENA: The 9-1-1 Association brought together two dozen public safety technology companies for the 11th Industry Collaboration Event (ICE 11). The ICE Program allows vendors to test leading-edge products and services that will advance Public Safety from legacy E9-1-1 capabilities to the data-rich, IP-based world of next generation (NG) emergency communications.

The hands-on, standards-driven testing allowed this year’s participants to revisit tests performed in the previous ICE 10 event and provided an opportunity to perform tests not executed previously. ICE 11 participants continued validating compliance with i3 version 3, building continuing knowledge that only collaborative, multi-party testing can provide.

Every day, 9-1-1 professionals like you help people facing issues of life and death. So often, a telecommunicator’s calm and reassuring voice is the first sign of hope when all can feel lost.

Right now, you have a chance to help members of our 9-1-1 family. When you contribute to NENA's Gold Line Scholarship Fund, you’re empowering 9-1-1 professionals to do their very best.

Time and time again, we've heard that the ability to attend conferences and training programs really makes a difference. Our scholarship recipients receive skills and knowledge that enable them to adapt and overcome the challenges they face every day. But they can't do it without your support!

Click here to donate or text NENA to 71777!

Our goal for this scholarship drive is $50,000 – enough to provide twenty scholarships for 9-1-1 professionals like you who don’t have access to this vital and life-changing training. It is only through your generosity that we can meet this goal and make an impact!

NENA  is seeking qualified candidates to manage interoperability programs under the auspices of the NG9-1-1 Interoperability Oversight Commission (NIOC).

The incumbent will provide general support to NIOC. NIOC is the independent oversight governance body for the NG9-1-1 Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Forest Guide, and other technical interoperability services key necessary for interoperability and security in NG9-1-1 in North America and beyond. These services are required under standards promulgated by NENA: The 9-1-1 Association and the Internet Engineering Task Force IETF. NIOC sets the rules and policy for operating these services and performs oversight for their day-to-day operation, including compliance and finances. NENA’s Board appointed NIOC as an independent organization in early 2020.

Thanks to you, telecommunicator reclassification legislation is gaining momentum in Congress! Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), and John Thune (R-SD) have introduced the Enhancing First Response Act (S. 3556), a companion bill to the House's 911 SAVES Act (H.R. 6319).

Click here now to help NENA fight for reclassification by urging your members of Congress in both houses to support these bills! It'll take less than five minutes of your time.

This legislative effort would reclassify Public Safety Telecommunicators as a "Protective Service Occupation" in the federal government's Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. The SOC currently categorizes 9-1-1 professionals as "Office and Administrative Support," which is based on an outdated, misinformed view of the essential, life-saving work performed by telecommunicators and it must be changed.

Click here to ask your Representative and Senators to support reclassification and help the 100,000 telecommunicators in our country get the respect they deserve.

Volunteers Wanted

NENA seeks volunteers from the User, Producer, and General Interest categories to join the Interface Specification Development Working Group. The WG is working on a revision of the NENA Rules for Use of Version Control Repositories document. This work will provide an update to NENA's procedures for managing API definitions and schemas for our standards on GitHub. Some issues identified that will be included in the second version include tagging versions of an interface or schema, updates to OpenAPI, and changes to interfaces or schema, managing branches between multiple specifications affecting the same interface or schema, errors and omissions in publishing interface and schema definitions, and any other issues identified by working group members.

Meeting times may vary.

NENA seeks volunteers for the Conveyance of EIDO Working Group to shepherd the completed draft standard through the document review process. The resulting document is intended to be an ANSI‑approved version of the standard.

Specifically, the working group seeks to add members in the User and General Interest categories; a User is one who utilizes 9-1-1 related products or services and General Interest participants are those who do not fit into the User or Producer categories, such as consultants or those who are part of state or federal agencies.

Click here to join the working group! Meetings take place on Fridays from 2PM - 3PM Eastern. Additional information can be obtained by emailing the WG Co-Chairs, Henry Unger, Tony Dunsworth, and Rick Blackwell.

The Joint NENA/APCO TERT (Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce) Working Group seeks volunteers in the General Interest and Producer categories. Producers develop and/or provide 9-1-1 related products and services and General Interest members are those who do not fit into the User or Producer interest category, such as consultants or those who are part of state or federal agencies.

The Working Group meets on Thursdays from 11AM to 12PM Eastern.

Click here to volunteer. You can contact WG Co-Chairs, Rebecca Conners and Jennifer Arnold with any additional questions.

NENA seeks volunteers to help develop administrative, technical, and operational standards for PSAPs/ECCs seeking to deploy or otherwise implement Incident Related Imagery (IRI) technology. The intended deliverable is an ANSI-approved standard.

The IRI WG seeks representation from User, Producer, and General Interest categories with experience in the public-facing and private-sector sides of the emergency-communications industry. Working Group efforts will be solution agnostic, not favoring or promoting any one platform or technology. PSAP/ECC representation is welcomed and encouraged from all levels, especially from frontline personnel currently working with, or who anticipate working with, IRI technology.

Meetings will be held the second Wednesday of every month from 3PM to 4PM Eastern, beginning on 01.10.24.
