NENA is proud to publish How 9-1-1 Is Changing in a COVID-19 World, the second paper in NENA’s 9-1-1 & COVID-19 report series. These reports are designed to inform public-safety stakeholders, policymakers, and the public about how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting 9-1-1 operations, technology, and personnel.

This report, based on 500 survey responses from 9-1-1 professionals across 44 states and territories, builds upon insights from our initial report published on April 3, 2020. For example, the first survey asked respondents whether overall call and dispatch volumes had changed, while this survey asked specifically which types of calls and dispatches had changed. The survey responses reflected in this report were collected from April 20 to 24, almost a month after our initial survey and well into nationwide efforts to stem the pandemic.

Survey access was provided to PSAP contacts using the NENA Enhanced PSAP Registry and Census (EPRC), a free service for public safety personnel that provides contact information for PSAPs during emergencies.

After careful consideration, NENA has decided to reschedule the NENA 2020 Conference & Expo, previously planned for June 13-18 in Long Beach, CA. The new dates are September 24-29 and Long Beach remains our host city. With the well-being of attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and volunteers as the number one priority, it is clear that rescheduling #NENA2020 is the only responsible course of action at this time.

We remain excited to host the 9-1-1 community later this year. A revised conference schedule and event details are now available at nena.org/nena2020.

Please take a moment to let us know if you have any questions regarding the date change; your voice matters, and we care about your feedback.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall. Until then, stay safe and healthy!

If you are a #NENA2020 registrant, speaker, or exhibit coordinator, check your inbox for a message sent on the morning of May 1 containing further event-rescheduling details specific to you.

Last year, the NENA Institute Board awarded five scholarships, one for each NENA region, to sit for the ENP examination. The NIB is pleased to announce that Patrice Coleman, Neva LoBue, and Jennifer Naklie have successfully passed the ENP examination using those scholarships! This year, four additional scholarships have been awarded. Each recipient is being encouraged to sit for the examination within the next several testing periods, depending on readiness to sit for the exam. Please join the NIB in congratulating Patrice, Neva, and Jennifer on successfully completing the ENP exam!

Congratulations to Trevin Hunter of Louisville Metro Emergency Services in Louisville, KY for being selected as the winner of this year’s William M. McMurray, ENP Scholarship! Way to go, Trevin! We look forward to seeing you at NENA 2020!

NENA members are telling us they’re in dire need of cleaning and disinfecting supplies to keep themselves safe from COVID-19, and NENA put the word out looking for help. Within hours of our appeal, AvKARE, a Tennessee-based distributor of infection-control products, offered PSAPs a free supply of hand sanitizer and a 25% discount on their product Waltz D – which is used widely in healthcare, food service, education, and commercial settings – by using promo code EMERGENCY. Thank you, AvKARE for stepping up so quickly in support of North America’s 9-1-1 professionals!

As NENA continues to closely monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we have developed a list of resources for members, chapters, and the greater 9-1-1 community.

NENA's COVID-19 resource page contains items including PSAP-guidance documents, EMD protocols, on-demand webinars, CoOPs and planning checklists, event-planner assistance, public education graphics, health and hygiene best practices, and many more resources to support you and your work during this ever-evolving situation. This page is updated with new information as it becomes available.

Do you have or know of other resources that should be posted? If so, you can contact NENA's Communications Director, Chris Nussman.

We’re in this together. With the extraordinary personal and professional challenges we're all facing during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been more vital to engage with each other, keep important conversations and connections going, and do all we can to stay motivated, informed, and prepared. As such, NENA is extending the membership renewal grace period to May 31 for all members yet to renew for 2020. Enjoy uninterrupted member services and benefits during this period, and stay connected to the information, tools, and resources you need to meet the challenges at hand.

Please contact member services at membership@nena.org if you have any questions. We stand by ready to assist in any way can.

While we are all struggling with the anxiety and work- and life-changes caused by COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to be kind to ourselves and practice self-care. When your job is to help others, sometimes helping yourself takes a back burner. That may be ok for a short time, however it will not serve anyone in the long term. During this passionate and fun presentation, you’ll learn why taking care of yourself first is not optional. Come on a journey to choose more joy for yourself, so that you have more of it to share with others.

The registry allows US healthcare workers to share clinical and life experiences in order to understand the perspectives and problems faced by those on the Covid-19 pandemic front lines. The HERO research program leverages PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, and is funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Personal and professional wellness is important, but we find that now, more than ever, we need to take care of ourselves, our families, and those on our teams. The NENA Wellness Continuum initiative is a comprehensive approach to wellness in the 9-1-1 industry. By sharing resources, best practices, and helpful tools and training in one location, we strive to inspire innovation and support wellness in all 9-1-1 professionals.

These materials address a wide range of topics that apply to not only an individual, but also an organization. The content is user driven, and we need your recommendations. If you have resources that you have used and feel would be beneficial for others to access, we encourage you to submit those materials (written, web, video, etc.) to help spark a groundswell of wellness initiatives across the industry.
