NENA is proud to publish How 9-1-1 Is Changing in a COVID-19 World, the second paper in NENA’s 9-1-1 & COVID-19 report series. These reports are designed to inform public-safety stakeholders, policymakers, and the public about how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting 9-1-1 operations, technology, and personnel.
This report, based on 500 survey responses from 9-1-1 professionals across 44 states and territories, builds upon insights from our initial report published on April 3, 2020. For example, the first survey asked respondents whether overall call and dispatch volumes had changed, while this survey asked specifically which types of calls and dispatches had changed. The survey responses reflected in this report were collected from April 20 to 24, almost a month after our initial survey and well into nationwide efforts to stem the pandemic.
Survey access was provided to PSAP contacts using the NENA Enhanced PSAP Registry and Census (EPRC), a free service for public safety personnel that provides contact information for PSAPs during emergencies.
After careful consideration, NENA has decided to reschedule the NENA 2020 Conference & Expo, previously planned for June 13-18 in Long Beach, CA. The new dates are September 24-29 and Long Beach remains our host city. With the well-being of attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and volunteers as the number one priority, it is clear that rescheduling #NENA2020 is the only responsible course of action at this time.
We remain excited to host the 9-1-1 community later this year. A revised conference schedule and event details are now available at nena.org/nena2020.
Please take a moment to let us know if you have any questions regarding the date change; your voice matters, and we care about your feedback.
We look forward to seeing you in the fall. Until then, stay safe and healthy!
If you are a #NENA2020 registrant, speaker, or exhibit coordinator, check your inbox for a message sent on the morning of May 1 containing further event-rescheduling details specific to you.
Congratulations to Trevin Hunter of Louisville Metro Emergency Services in Louisville, KY for being selected as the winner of this year’s William M. McMurray, ENP Scholarship! Way to go, Trevin! We look forward to seeing you at NENA 2020!

While we are all struggling with the anxiety and work- and life-changes caused by COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to be kind to ourselves and practice self-care. When your job is to help others, sometimes helping yourself takes a back burner. That may be ok for a short time, however it will not serve anyone in the long term. During this passionate and fun presentation, you’ll learn why taking care of yourself first is not optional. Come on a journey to choose more joy for yourself, so that you have more of it to share with others.

NENA will be adjudicating two appeals on comment resolution against the ANSI candidate i3 standard, NENA-STA-010, on Wednesday, May 13 at 9AM Eastern. The appeals will be held before a panel of individuals knowledgeable to the policy and other concerns related to the appeal who do not have demonstrably real or apparent conflicts of interest with the subject of the appeal or the person filing the appeal. At the appeal hearing, the appellant must first demonstrate adverse effects, improper actions, or inactions of the Working Group.
