NENA’s Next Generation 9-1-1 Industry Collaboration Event (ICE) series provides the opportunity for 9-1-1 equipment and service providers to come together to test products and services in an open, supportive, and collaborative environment. You are invited to participate in the upcoming 9th event in the series. The upcoming ICE 9 is all about security for NG9-1-1 and will be unlike any other ICE events that have been held to date. Security touches all aspects of NG Core Services, ESInet, and PSAP environments, and successful interoperability testing of security affecting NG9-1-1 interfaces and interconnection points must involve a wide spectrum of technology solutions in order to be comprehensive and produce meaningful test results. The ICE Planning Committee encourages all public safety technology vendors and service providers who offer any type of NG9-1-1 public safety solutions, as well as those who specifically offer NG9-1-1 security solutions, to please sign up, participate in the planning, and help create the best event possible. Contact NENA's Committee Resource Manager, Delaine Arnold, if you would like to participate. September 2018 found the Carolinas in the crosshairs of one of the largest hurricanes ever. Many counties, cities, and towns will never be the same due to the devastation incurred by this storm. The NC Chapters of NENA and APCO have joined forces with the TLC Fund to assist those 9-1-1 Professionals impacted by Hurricane Florence. While the TLC Fund was established to assist solely North Carolina’s 9-1-1 professionals, the TLC Fund has agreed to temporarily amend their bylaws to also assist South Carolinians with this particular fund-raising effort. Click here to make a donation through the TLC Fund. You may also choose to participate in the "Adopt a PSAP" program if you would prefer to send items such as clothing, food, toiletries, etc. to storm-affected centers. Contact help@nc911relief.com for more information on how you can adopt a PSAP. Volunteers Wanted
The FCC provided its Report and Order (R&O) regarding the transition to Real-Time Text (RTT) in late 2016 identifying a requirement for Tier 1 wireless carriers to provide at least one RTT capable handset option by December 31, 2017. In general, traffic generated by RTT capable handsets will be converted by the wireless carrier to TTY so legacy PSAPs can receive the call using legacy TTY devices through either E9-1-1 or transitional NG9-1-1 systems. As a service to be requested, currently there is no process to determine if a wireless carrier is RTT capable in a serving area, to verify that a NG9-1-1 PSAP is capable of receiving native RTT, and there is no criteria or method for the PSAP to notify the wireless carriers of their readiness. Volunteers are sought to participate in the PSAP Guidelines for RTT Readiness Work Group. While no specific knowledge is necessary to join the work group, subject matter experts from the PSAP, carrier, accessibility, CPE, and network provider communities are desired to ensure the best understanding of industry needs for the creation of proper implementation guidelines. The PSAP Guidelines for RTT Readiness Work Group plans to meet Fridays at 11AM Eastern, starting on October 5. Click here to join. The current 9-1-1 Suicide Prevention Standard published by NENA is due for revision. The NENA Suicide Prevention Work Group is, therefore, resuming soon. This will be an important revision process since several changes are needed to assure best possible care for those 9-1-1 callers at imminent risk of suicide. This standard will pursue inclusion of critical information about Crisis Text Line, terms for optimizing collaboration with National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and other accredited crisis call centers, and other changes. 9-1-1 professionals and mental health professionals are urged to join with other stakeholders as members of the work group to update this standard.
