Annually, NENA partners with the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) Foundation in the national 24/7 Day event, which recognizes first responders, medical personnel, and American Red Cross volunteers who work around the clock, 24/7, serving our communities to ensure people don’t face emergencies alone. This year, NACS is doing more to honor first responders, including 9-1-1 professionals, with their new "First Responder of the Year" program. From NACS: Each year, the NACS Foundation unites the entire convenience store industry by celebrating 24/7 Day, bringing together more than 30,000 convenience stores to thank first responders for all they do in times of need. Now, we're expanding this celebration of first responders with the inaugural First Responder of the Year Award, a celebration of those heroes who go above and beyond in times of crisis. First responders rise to the occasion when we need them most and they respond to any number of emergencies. From natural disasters and everyday accidents to medical emergencies and hazardous material incidents, it all counts when there is a moment of great need. From 9-1-1 dispatchers, nurses, firefighters, police, EMT, and Red Cross volunteers, there are many types of first responders. This award is an opportunity to say "thank you" to those who selflessly commit themselves to helping others and let them know we see their sacrifice, passion, and effort. Do you know a first responder that has gone above and beyond in a time of need? Fill out the nomination form to nominate someone you know who has risen to the occasion for their community.

![]() Public Safety Leaders Urge Senate to Fund Nationwide 9-1-1 Upgrade in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act
On June 5, a coalition representing state and local government leaders, industry professionals, and tens of thousands of 9-1-1 first responders sent a letter to members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee urging federal investment in Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) technology to replace outdated emergency communications infrastructure across the country. Despite years of bipartisan support for using Federal Communications Commission spectrum auction revenues to fund NG9-1-1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) recently passed by the U.S. House includes no such provisions. "Current 9-1-1 systems rely on technologies that are decades old," the letter states. "These systems are less reliable, less secure, and more challenging to maintain while attempting to meet the expanding needs of emergency responders and citizens who need their help." Click here to read more. The Federal Communications Commission will host a Hurricane Season Resiliency Roundtable, led by its Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. As we head into hurricane season, the roundtable provides a timely venue to promote resiliency and recovery efforts. The roundtable will focus on collaboration between communications service providers, electric utilities, and emergency management officials. Panelists will share best practices related to preparedness and response; highlight the importance of collaboration between these critical sectors; and apply lessons learned to identify practical next steps.
