Speak up when racism or sexism occurs on the job and present data on its impact on your performance as well as the company’s. Cultivate allies and sponsors at your organization to help police bias.

These strategies were discussed during a “family style conversation” at the packed “Leadership in a Difficult Climate” session moderated by an engaging Symone D. Sanders, a democratic strategist and CNN political commentator.

This was the message presented by an all-star panel of financial planners and investment experts on Friday morning. Led by moderator Rob Wilson, President of Rob Wilson TV, the panel included P. David Bramble, Managing Partner of MCB Real Estate, Lazetta Rainey Braxton, President, Founder and CEO of Association of African American Financial Advisors, and Rhondale Haywood, Senior Investment Advisor, Vice President of PNC.

Long before Ousman Jobe walked into his interview at LinkedIn, he already knew the questions he would be asked.

He had reached out to all of his contacts at the company and learned about its inner workings. He was hired in 2013 because of “relationships and fit,” said Jobe, Strategic Partnerships Manager at LinkedIn.

Relationships are important to build and leverage to get where you want to go,” said Jobe, a panelist for the “Creating a Job Offer Through Nontraditional Means” session.
