Ousman Jobe was joined by Kerry D. Chandler, Under Armour, Chief Human Resources Officer; and, John Clayton, MBA, Director of Diversity Inclusion & Workforce Initiatives, Independence Blue Cross.

Preparation, adaptability, transferrable skills, referrals, emotional intelligence, and a global mindset give candidates a head start in standing out from the talent pool, panelists said.

To advance at your company or to find a new position at another organization, focus on your transferrable skills at the interview, advised Chandler. “Speak about things you know you excel in. Tell a story about those things.”

Always ask for the names of interviewers and don’t be afraid to take notes, which can help you customize thank you notes. Treat everyone with kindness, especially the receptionist who in some companies is asked to provide feedback on new candidates, panelists said.

Make an impression during interviews with your questions, research and authencity.

“I like to hire people who know something I don’t,” said Chandler, adding candidates need to be honest about their strengths and weaknesses. Be confident about saying what you are not great at.

Sometimes the job you are looking for doesn’t exist until you show up and it’s created when they see your skill set, Ousman said.
