"Back in March I wrote about the how the NAFA Board of Trustees wanted to make monumental changes to NAFA’s bylaws, the legal document that dictates NAFA’s critical membership and board structure and governance format. I encouraged you to make yourselves aware of the discussion, to ask questions, and to get engaged in the conversation...when we finally conducted the vote a few weeks ago, we were not really surprised that the amendments were approved by a margin of nearly 15 to 1, with 93 percent of respondents voting in favor of the changes."

Robert Leale of CanBusHack.com will discuss how these systems are being secured and how they are being hacked. The presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Remarketing Strategy

Wholesale used vehicle prices declined slightly in August. That left the Manheim Used Vehicle Value reading at 126.9 for August, an increase of 2.1 percent from a year ago. Wholesale pricing in 2016 has been supported by a retail market that enjoyed higher volumes, stabilizing margins, and respectable turn rates. And, importantly, dealers have continued to increase efficiencies in their used vehicle operations.

Now into its second model year of existence, the auto industry’s still-new 5-cycle fuel efficiency testing process is getting good reviews from governments, manufacturers, and consumers alike. After criticism of manufacturers’ old 2-cycle testing process for fuel efficiency resulted in an updated procedure for the 2015 model year, today’s fuel economy ratings for all models on the Canadian market can transparently be seen as a more accurate reflection of real-world driving conditions and the fuel consumption actually achieved by regular vehicle use.

The Federal government and the trucking industry recently came to a consensus: trucks and buses need to be slowed down. A new proposal released August 26 would require all new trucks, buses, and passenger vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds to be fitted with speed limiting devices, forcing them to travel at a max speed somewhere between 60 and 68 mph. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation want speeds within that range to help protect the environment, as well as protect the lives of drivers across the country.

Industry News

On September 9, General Motors announced a massive 4.3 million vehicle recall covering a wide range of 2014 to 2017 model year vehicles under all four GM nameplates. The cars have a software defect that can, in rare instances, prevent the airbags from deploying in a crash. Chevy's Caprice PPV, Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado and GMC's Sierra and Yukon are all covered under this recall to name just a few affected models. One death and three injuries have already been linked to this problem.

Nissan is recalling about 134,000 cars and SUVs worldwide because brake fluid could leak and cause fires. In some cases, the company says people should park the vehicles outside until they are fixed. The recall covers certain 2015 to 2017 Murano SUVs and 2016 to 2017 Maxima large cars that are equipped with intelligent cruise control. Also included are some 2015 and 2016 Murano hybrids.

Ford Motor Company has been plagued by door latch issues on some of it's most popular cars, trucks, and vans for the past 18 months. This is a problem that has not gone away, promoting the manufacturer to recall 1.5 million vehicles to repair door latches that can allow the doors to open while the vehicle is moving. Many of the same models are a part of this expanded recall, including the 2013 to 2015 Ford C-Max and Ford Escape, 2012 to 2015 Ford Focus, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC and 2014 to 2016 Ford Transit Connect.

Technology

Google has developed a police vehicle detection system for their self-driving cars. The detection system automatically detects police vehicles based on the pattern of flashing lights on the police cars. Police vehicles are sometimes engaged in a pursuit operation. During these close chasing situations, the police vehicle has the authority to jump traffic signals and run without any speed limitations. However, an obstruction of any form could disrupt the emergency response operation.

Older drivers may soon be traveling a safer road thanks to smarter cars that can detect oncoming traffic, steer clear of trouble, and even hit the brakes when a collision appears imminent.Revolutionary breakthroughs are expected in the next few years, when measures such as robotic braking systems are supposed to become standard features in all cars on U.S. roads.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims that his cars will be the safest on the road, once the company completes an Over the Air (OTA) update of their Autopilot system within the next two weeks. This upgrade was required so that the system could become more reliant on the Model S and X's radar-based sensors. The semi-autonomous Autopilot system had previously relied on camera-based sensors to recognize obstacles in the road. The update that Tesla has developed is a first-of-it's-kind software.

Industry Movers and Shakers

As global emissions standards begin to get stricter, many manufacturers are beginning to seek partnerships to help trim the costs associated with developing new technology. Most recently, Volkswagen Truck and Bus and Navistar International agreed to terms on a wide-reaching technology and purchasing agreement. This deal saw VW spend $256 million to take a 16.6 percent ownership stake in the Illinois-based truck manufacturer. A full merger is possible once the technology and procurement alliance between the two truck makers takes a more definitive shape.

In what seems to be a bid to grow his auto parts retailer investments, billionaire investor Carl Icahn is purchasing the remaining shares of auto supplier Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation for $281 billion. The deal was done through a subsidiary of his firm, Icahn Enterprises, LP, and gives Icahn the remaining 18 percent of the company's shares he did not already own. Should Federal-Mogul shareholders vote to approve the deal, the auto parts supplier would become the largest privately-held subsidiary of Icahn Enterprises.

Sustainability

Many European manufacturers are beginning to invest more heavily in electric vehicles, and Daimler is now the latest name to throw their hat into the EV ring. The parent company of luxury brand Mercedes-Benz, Daimler recently announced that they plan to unveil at least six electric vehicles to keep pace with Tesla, BMW, and Audi. While a half-dozen EVs is the brand's minimum, Daimler said that number could climb as high as nine fully electric vehicles. The German automaker plans on rolling out these new models between 2018 and 2024.

Nissan will soon be introducing to the Japanese market a new range-extended electric version of the Note, according to recent reports. The range-extended version of the compact hatchback will apparently be going on sale in November. While the Chevy Bolt (Vauxhall/Opel Ampera-e) won’t be released in the Japanese market, the timing draws a parallel with the soon-to-be-released American long-range electric vehicle (EV).

General Motors Co. is beginning to ready it's Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan for the retail production debut of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The latest sustainable offering from Chevy, the Bolt is a pure battery-electric vehicle with an EPA-certified 238-mile range and is currently on schedule to hit dealership showrooms later this year. And while it might not have received the same level of hype, the Bolt will have an advantage over Tesla's much-anticipated Model 3 because it will be going on sale one year sooner.
