Daimler Plans To Roll Out At Least Six New EVs By 2024

Many European manufacturers are beginning to invest more heavily in electric vehicles, and Daimler is now the latest name to throw their hat into the EV ring. The parent company of luxury brand Mercedes-Benz, Daimler recently announced that they plan to unveil at least six electric vehicles to keep pace with Tesla, BMW, and Audi.

While a half-dozen EVs is the brand's minimum, Daimler said that number could climb as high as nine fully electric vehicles. The German automaker plans on rolling out these new models between 2018 and 2024.

Most European automakers are known for producing diesel-powered cars to help consumers save on fuel. But with the ongoing fallout from Volkswagen's Dieselgate scandal, there's now a bit of a negative stigma attached to diesel engines, especially in the United States.

So this recent backlash against diesel, coupled with advancements in battery technology, it makes sense that German car firms like Daimler are beginning to switch to EVs as a way to save fuel, as well as become more sustainable.

Mercedes is also said to be working on an SUV that is a plug-in hybrid powered by fuel cells. This would enable the vehicle to travel up up to 50 km (30 miles) on a charge, and would then run on electricity generated by hydrogen. The automaker also remains on track to unveil a new electric car next Wednesday, September 28, at the Paris Auto Show.
