NAFA Association News

During the rulemaking, NAFA repeatedly voiced its commitment to improving vehicle efficiency and reducing emissions. But NAFA also repeatedly said the proposed Phase 2 standards must be affordable, must not compromise performance, and must recognize the diverse needs of companies and agencies that depend on vocational vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles. In NAFA’s opinion, EPA and NTHSA ignored these concerns, subjecting fleets to standards and technologies for which they are not prepared and cannot afford, and spurring unintended negative consequences for the industry.

Individuals interested in proving their mastery of fleet management now have a new way of doing so through the Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS®) program offered by NAFA. Individuals can choose any four disciplines and, if they pass those exams, will earn their CAFS® designation. NAFA’s CAFS® program is based on the Association’s Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM®) program, which tests individuals’ expertise in eight core disciplines of fleet management. The CAFS® program tests an individual’s expertise in four disciplines.

New Jersey state legislature is considering a bill that would prohibit drivers from eating and drinking anything behind the wheel. This means that, as far as the state is concerned, hitting the drive-through on the way home from work, then eating your burger behind the wheel would be equivalent to using your cell phone behind the wheel.

Industry News

We often hear how important it is to get at least eight hours of sleep each night, but sometimes it can be easy to forget how important those eight hours can be throughout the day. This is especially true when it comes to driving to and from work each morning or trudging home after a late night out. But recent statistics show that drowsy driving crashes are becoming more and more frequent and the fatalities that result from these crashes are climbing as well. Many studies also show that driving drowsy is nearly as bad as driving drunk.

Ford issued recalls for about 91,000 vehicles worldwide to replace faulty fuel-pump parts that could potentially cause a car to stall without warning. The automaker will replace fuel-pump control modules in 88,151 vehicles, including certain of its 2013-15 model year Ford Taurus sedans, Ford Flex crossover utility vehicles, Lincoln MKS sedans, Lincoln MKT SUVs, and Ford Police Interceptor sedans.

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 64,500 Elantras from the 2013 model year because the brake pedal stopper pads can deteriorate over time. The automaker said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that this issue can result in perpetual illumination of the car's brake lights and can also result in the driver being able to shift into drive without placing their foot on the brake pedal first.

Contract negotiations between Detroit’s automakers and the Canadian auto workers union officially began last month. This means that workers at General Motors’ beleaguered Oshawa Assembly Plant will be looking for reassurance from the manufacturer that the plant will continue to be utilized, despite the fact it has been steadily losing vehicles to produce. The plant currently produces the Chevrolet Impala, the Chevrolet Equinox, the Buick Regal, and the Cadillac XTS.

NAFA received word that Association Co-Founder George Wilson passed away on April 4 this year. He was 95. The group would go on to become NAFA, and George would serve as Third Vice President of the Association, Chairman for the New York region, and head of the Membership Committee.

Pokemon Go, the smartphone game phenomenon which combines augmented reality with GPS tracking and the world-famous monsters of the Pokemon series, is a digital version of a treasure hunt. NAFA Fleet Management Association’s Safety Advisory Council urged fleet professionals and drivers to remember that, if you’re behind the wheel, it is also another form of distracted driving.

On the heels of Verizon's recent purchase of Fleetmatics, AT&T announced that it will be launching it's own telematics system for commercial fleets. The software will be offered through the cellphone carrier's Partner Exchange agreement with Toronto-based telematics vendor Fleet Complete.

Ford Motor Company recently announced that they plan to introduce an autonomous vehicle specifically designed for use in a ride-hailing or ride-sharing service by 2021. The automaker says that the vehicle would be "specifically designed for commercial mobility services" and be built in high volumes. Ford CEO Mark Fields said that when this groundbreaking new vehicle hits the streets in five years, it will, in essence, make human drivers obsolete.

by the end of this summer, the people of Pittsburgh will be able to catch a ride in one of Uber's new self-driving vehicles—specially modified Volvo XC90 SUVs. By the end of the year, Uber will have taken delivery of 100 XC90s. Uber doesn't plan to build its own self-driving cars; rather it will produce kits that can be installed on other vehicles.

A newly uncovered vulnerability in the MirrorLink infotainment software is forcing lots of hard questions about who's ultimately responsible for security in the automobile supply chain. Activation of MirrorLink renders the car vulnerable to access by third-parties, who could then mess with the software for the anti-lock braking system, for example, or other critical safety features.

Despite reportedly taking $10.5 million in reservation deposits, the Nikola Motor Company has completely backed away from its plans to offer a battery-electric Nikola One semi-truck, according to recent reports. While not slated for a full reveal until the end of the year, it had previously been stated by the company that the semi would possess: 6 different electric motors, a 320 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack, and a total system output of 2,000 horsepower plus 3,700 pound-feet of torque.

Electronics powerhouse Samsung says it is thinking of jumping into the electric car business, according to Vice Chairman Lee Jae Yong. Samsung is rumored to be in talks with Fiat to purchase its electronics division, Magneti Marelli. But if Samsung is just getting into the game now, it has a lot of ground to make up. Apple has been pursuing its "Project Titan" vision for at least three years already.

Subaru is the latest automaker to take aim at trying to meet stricter U.S. emissions regulations. The Japanese manufacturer announced that they will be launching their first plug-in hybrid by 2018 and that they plan to release an all-wheel-drive, all-electric crossover in the states by the year 2021. It is expected this new EV will be a mid-sized vehicle based on either the Forester or Outback and ride on the new global platform that Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru's parent company, unveiled earlier this year.

Volkswagen AG has begun paying out it's fine for their infamous "Dieselgate" scandal. However, the German automaker is still on the hook for much of the $15.3 billion they owe in fines and penalties. But VW isn't the only company in hot water over these emissions problems anymore. Robert Bosch GmbH, one of VW's biggest suppliers, is now facing charges that it helped the manufacturer cover up their cheating on emissions tests. This is according to a lawyer for U.S. owners of Volkswagen vehicles with affected diesel engines.
