"NAFA depends on Affiliates for funding and expertise, but their ability to fully participate in the leadership of the Association has been limited. Sure, NAFA is an association dedicated to fleet management professionals – those who practice the art of fleet management – but we would not exist without the support of Affiliates in nearly every program we offer. It is time to give NAFA Affiliates a louder voice and a greater say in NAFA’s future."

NAFA Association News

NAFA recently announced it is seeking input on changes being considered to the Association’s membership qualifications and board structure that would enable a wider audience to join and become leaders of the Association. Chief among the changes being discussed by NAFA is a broadening of the definition of who qualifies to be a member of the Association, which is already the largest fleet-related association in the world.

Though most Canadian jurisdictions still lack a formal carbon tax, and many will still oppose it in any form, a political near-consensus is emerging on the idea of putting a "price on carbon", the most common euphemism for a carbon tax such as the one that has been in effect in the province of British Columbia since 2008.

Industry News

Subaru recently announced it was recalling some 50,000 vehicles because of the potential for a serious steering problem. The steering columns in select 2016-17 Outback and Legacy models could possibly fail due to their being machined improperly. The brand, which is known for safety and reliability, is strongly recommending that customers not drive the affected models until they are repaired.

Eight automakers are recalling more than 12 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace Takata air bag inflators that can explode with too much force. Documents detailing recalls by Honda, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Ferrari, and Mitsubishi were posted on May 27 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They're part of a massive expansion of Takata air bag recalls announced earlier on May.

Fatal crashes involving drivers who recently used marijuana doubled in Washington after the state legalized the drug, according to the latest research. This also shows that legal limits for marijuana and driving are arbitrary and unsupported by science, which could result in unsafe motorists going free and others being wrongfully convicted for impaired driving.

GM said it’s reducing deliveries to rental fleets by 20,000, the most yet this year and the equivalent of about seven percent of last May’s 293,000 vehicle sales. The largest U.S. automaker’s performance underscores its mission to put fewer of its vehicles in rental-car fleets and more into the hands of retail consumers, who tend to buy better-equipped cars that sell at fatter profits.

Nissan denied South Korean claims that it faked emissions figures in its UK-built Qashqai SUV diesel models. The government's environment ministry said it would fine Nissan $279,920 and order a recall of the 814 new Qashqai vehicles sold in the country so far.

As newer models of electric vehicles (EVs) roll off the assembly line, sales of such automobiles began to decline last year. Factors like limited range and long charge times can also wreak havoc on EV sales, and battery producer StoreDot is out to change this by making charging such cars quicker and easier.

Cadillac has quietly pulled the plug on the ELR, a high-line version of the Chevrolet Volt, due a decidedly weak response by American motorists. The Caddy plug-in hybrid has been out of production since March. Launched with high expectations just two years ago, the Cadillac ELR never seemed to charge up the market.

The automotive industry got another step closer to autonomous vehicles becoming an option on showroom floors when two Chevrolet Bolt EVs were spotted driving around San Francisco with all types of sensors and cameras strapped to their roofs - a sure sign that the cars were attempting to navigate themselves around the "City by the Bay."
