INDUSTRY NEWS

Honda North America said on December 3 that it would expand its recall of potentially explosive driver-side airbag inflators nationwide in accordance with a request from federal regulators, even as the airbag manufacturer continued to insist it’s not necessary.

During a Congressional hearing on December 3, Takata Corp. clung to its assertion that there is no need for a national recall of its faulty airbags and said it would not accede to the wishes of federal safety regulators demanding the action. The Japanese supplier also stated that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lacked the authority to compel the supplier to institute any sort of recall. NHTSA disagreed with the claim.

Prices at the pump are falling, but that hasn't slowed production plans for hybrid and electric vehicles. Despite the fact that sales of SUV and crossover utility vehicles are up 11.9 percent this year, while gas-electric hybrid sales are down 15 percent, according to the research firm Autodata, automakers are gearing up for greater electric, fuel-cell, and hybrid vehicle production.

U.S. ethanol production is likely to continue at a record rate despite its rare premium to gasoline as cheap corn, high biofuel prices, and even cool weather provide ideal conditions and strong profit margins. The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently said ethanol production averaged 982,000 barrels per day in the week ending November 21, the largest volume in the dataset that started in 2010.

Toyota built 500 Lexus LFA supercars between 2010 and 2012 in what has been called a "secretive workshop." The automaker has been wondering what to do with that production line since the last LFA rolled off in December 2012 and, like so much else for Toyota these days, the answer is a hydrogen car – and in about the same small numbers.
