No less than 230 fleet managers met for a breakfast meeting and listened to a presentation by Éric Descarries, Automotive Journalist for automotive website Autosphere.ca.

On January 24, the St. Louis Gateway Chapter held their annual Business Meeting and Auto Show gathering at the Renaissance Downtown, across the street from the America's Center Convention Complex. "We had a good turn-out, as usual for this meeting," said St. Louis Chapter Chair Michele Ryan.

On February 7, NAFA Executive Director Phil Russo, CAE signed a 3-year agreement with FleetVision for them to take the lead in developing the content for NAFA's International Fleet Academy, the next phase in the Association's ongoing international goals. Growing beyond the scope of NAFA's international seminars, this new entity will now include two different levels of education.

Former race car driver and CEO of MotorVation Derek Daly will be the Keynote Speaker on Thursday, April 25 at NAFA's 2013 I&E in Atlantic City, NJ.
Today, Daly is CEO/Founder of MotorVation which specializes in team-building systems. The company uses racing as a metaphor for business, specifically with the aspect that rather than having the spotlight solely trained on the individual race car driver, the sport relies on team effort.

NAFA MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS
Boynton Beach Fleet Administrator and NAFA Member Mario Guzman, CAFM, said the extended lifecycles on the vehicles was necessitated by the economic crash of 2008, with the ripple effect of decreased revenue from property taxes forcing extra belt-tightening. A fund designated for the fleet department had to be diverted to protect the general fund, from which numerous city programs are reliant.

NAFA Alumnus and Distinguished Service Award recipient (1983) John D Peterson died on Christmas Eve, 2012 just one month short of his 99th birthday. He had been a NAFA member for 45 years. John’s career encompassed ten years in the theatre supply business and 27 years in the leasing business. He started at First National Lease in Portland, OR in 1957.

Transport Canada has released the results of a study, which focuses on the safety and environmental performance of low rolling resistance tires. The study showed that the current generation of low rolling resistance tires provides a similar level of snow traction performance as conventional tires, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Also, The Province of Ontario has welcomed its first 2013 Volkswagen Jetta – a Turbocharged Hybrid.

Wholesale used vehicle values retreated as expected in January, with Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the market waning and auction supplies from commercial consignors rising. Continued strength in the retail market, however, kept the decline in wholesale prices modest, for now. On a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis, wholesale prices fell 0.6 percent in January, with January’s Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reading of 123.4 representing a 1.8 percent decline from a year ago.

Chevrolet is entering the U.S. and Canadian diesel car markets this summer with a 2.0L turbo-diesel version of the Cruze, featuring what the automaker claims to be the cleanest diesel passenger car engine General Motors has ever produced. Clean diesels generate at least 90 percent less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions when compared to previous-generation diesels.

United Parcel Service (UPS) announced the rollout of California’s largest electric-vehicle fleet on February 5 at its West Sacramento hub. UPS is deploying 100 zero-emission, all-electric delivery vehicles that will deliver packages throughout the state. The fleet of trucks will help California achieve widespread deployment of zero-emission vehicles, as called for under an executive order by the Governor.

Chrysler will soon be back in the financial services business for the first time since its 2009 bankruptcy. The maker will launch a new partnership with Santander Consumer USA Inc., of Dallas, TX this coming spring to offer "a full spectrum of auto financing services to Chrysler Group and FIAT customers and dealers under the name Chrysler Capital." The move, company officials hope, will make it easier to compete with the likes of Ford and Toyota.

The 2013-2014 NAFA Board of Trustees was recently announced at the Board of Governors session in Los Angeles, CA in January. NAFA Secretary Sheryl Grossman cast the required ballot vote, and the Board of Trustees ratified the new Trustees. The 2013-2014 Board of Trustees will begin their term on April 23, 2013 at the Association Business Meeting at the 2013 I&E.

The official airport of NAFA’s 2013 Institute & Expo (I&E) is actually in Philadelphia rather than Atlantic City, the site of the conference. NAFA is encouraging attendees to the I&E to fly into Philadelphia International Airport, which offers more direct flights and lower rates, and is represented by all major airlines. NAFA is running a shuttle to and from Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The NAFA shuttle is not only convenient, but provides a great networking opportunity as well!

NAFA invites 2013 I&E exhibitors to participate in a Silent Auction to help raise money for the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. As a matter of fact, St. Jude's gets one hundred percent from the proceeds of this event. NAFA's Silent Auction is a traditional favorite of the expo attendees. Joining fellow exhibitors in donating an item to the auction will help them gain added exposure on the expo floor, as conference attendees visit their booths to take a closer look at the items they've placed up-for-bid.

The oil industry, environmentalists, taxpayer groups, livestock growers, and foreign aid groups have asked Congress to repeal the mandate requiring a 15 percent blend of ethanol in gasoline, after a federal court upheld the rule in early February. More than forty percent of the U.S. corn crop is presumed to go to ethanol, combining with a continuing Midwest drought to drive up corn prices. In a conference call on February 4, refiners said the fuel has adverse effects on everything from car engines to outboard motors to chain saws.

The attention of automotive executives in Asia, Europe, and North America is beginning to swing toward an unusual but promising new alternate power source: hydrogen. Consumers continue to show decreased interest in electric vehicles, or EVs, which dominated U.S. streets in the first decade of the 20th century before being displaced by gasoline-powered cars. Despite the promise of "green" transportation - and despite billions of dollars in investment, most recently by Nissan Motor Co. - EVs continue to be plagued by many of the problems that eventually scuttled electrics in the 1910's and more recently in the 1990's.

In a significant development domestic automotive brands accounted for half of the Car-Brand Perception Survey’s Top 10, with the California-based electric vehicle start-up Tesla Motors rounding out the list in tenth. The other domestic brands included Chevrolet, ranked fourth; Cadillac, at seventh; and Dodge, at ninth. The other brands in the Top 10 included Mercedes-Benz, ranked fifth, followed by sixth-ranked Volvo, and BMW in eighth which, in an unexpected development, saw a decline in its brand awareness score.

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin’s retirement leaves the Democrat’s seat wide open to either party in 2014. But whether a Democrat or a Republican takes the prize, wind and biofuels advocates are tasting victory. "We won’t take anything for granted," said Monte Shaw, Executive Director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, but the group "is positive that whoever takes Sen. Harkin’s place will be a strong supporter."
