Transport Canada Releases Study Results on Low Rolling Resistance Tires

Transport Canada has released the results of a study, which focuses on the safety and environmental performance of low rolling resistance tires. Conducted by the National Research Council on behalf of Transport Canada’s ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program, the study showed that the current generation of low rolling resistance tires provides a similar level of snow traction performance as conventional tires, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Low rolling resistance tires, which are fabricated to advance vehicle fuel efficiency, are constructed of innovative materials and have treads, dimensions and weights to help lessen the energy lost as it rolls across the road surface.

The study, entitled Packed Snow Performance of Low Rolling Resistance Class 8 Heavy Truck Tires, looked at numerous brands of tires to evaluate their performance in packed snow winter conditions.  The tires used in the study were chosen from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Program’s standard list.

Results from this study will inform Canada’s proposed emission regulations for heavy-duty vehicles and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Additional test results from the ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles program will also be considered.

The Canadian trucking industry will benefit from the support of these study results, which will help to maintain road safety and provide environmental benefits.

Ontario Government Fleet Welcomes Hybrid Vehicle

The Province of Ontario has welcomed its first 2013 Volkswagen Jetta – a Turbocharged Hybrid. Volkswagen Canada highlighted that they are pleased to be part of the province’s fleet, and will be providing a total of 40 Jettas, as part of the government’s first order.

The Province will also be receiving several TDI Clean Diesel-powered Jettas. The vehicles, which provide a positive combination of size and fuel efficiency, also offer lower operating costs, owing to the cars’ strong resale value.
