Police Department Bridges Gaps with Ice Cream Truck

NAFA Regular Member DeAnn Reynolds, CAFM®, Fleet and Equipment Supervisor for the City of Springfield Police Department, has a different relationship than most with the phrase, "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream."

In Springfield, Missouri, the police department is taking its vow to protect and serve to a whole new level. When you crave a frozen treat there, local law enforcement might be about to serve you. Recently, the Springfield Police Foundation awarded the department with a fully outfitted ice cream truck, through the generous donations of local businesses and foundations.

The 2007 Ford Econoline van has been dubbed the “Cold Patrol” and has started patrolling neighborhoods unannounced as weather, time, and budget permits. There is not a set schedule for the ice cream truck, but it will also make appearances at local events from time to time.

The department is hopeful that this program will help local law enforcement connect and engage with citizens, especially children, as part of the department’s community policing philosophy.

“We are grateful to the Springfield Police Foundation and the generous donors who are making this all possible,” said Police Chief Paul Williams. “This fun and unique tool will give our officers the opportunity to interact with people, especially kids, without the chaos of a crisis that usually draws a police presence.

“We want families to see their local police officers as approachable people who are here to help whenever needed,” said Williams. “We look at this as one more way to help us bridge any gaps that may exist between officers and the citizens we serve and protect every day.”
