Maximizing Your Return on Involvement: The Value of MPI Membership

A letter from Carol Priest, MPI Toronto Chapter Member of 35 years
Joining the MPI Toronto Chapter in 1991 was a natural step while working at Showmakers, Canada’s top event production company at the time. MPI was the gold standard for industry affiliations, and with fewer than 200 members, it provided an intimate and dynamic networking environment. Immersing myself in committee work early on, I was involved in planning meetings and special events. Without virtual platforms, all meetings were in person, fostering strong connections and a shared sense of purpose. Even then, we aimed to push boundaries, experimenting with venues, speakers, and even food choices to elevate member experiences.

Over the years, MPI has been instrumental in CPE’s growth. The opportunities to meet planners and suppliers, explore new venues, and attend industry education sessions have been invaluable. Now, in my 35th consecutive year as a member, I reflect on how this long-standing involvement has shaped CPE. Understanding planners' challenges and perspectives has deepened my ability to serve clients effectively. MPI has connected me to industry professionals at all levels, fostering mentorship relationships that have evolved into long-term business collaborations.
Rather than single standout moments, my journey with MPI is a collection of meaningful interactions. I’ve had inquiries from potential client’s months or even years after meeting them. Former mentees have become experienced planners; some eventually becoming clients or valued vendors. Participating in GMID panels and mentorship programs has been a rewarding way to give back while also gaining insights into emerging trends and industry shifts — and, of course, having fun along the way!
MPI’s resources have also been a powerful support system. The MPI Directory has placed CPE in front of key decision-makers and reinforced our credibility in the corporate entertainment niche. Fellow members have offered invaluable feedback on proposals and RFP responses, and the Toronto Chapter office has always been a welcoming and helpful resource, reinforcing the strong sense of community within MPI.

While time has not always permitted deep involvement in committee, director, or Board of Directors work, sponsorship opportunities have provided tremendous value many times over. Sponsoring event entertainment allows CPE to showcase its expertise while engaging with planners across various experience levels. Follow-up tools such as attendee lists, metrics, and high-resolution event photos have also proven beneficial in maintaining connections and marketing efforts.
One thing I do regret is not attending more of MPI’s World Education Congress (WEC) events. These large-scale conventions offer a unique chance to bond with fellow members, experience high-caliber programming, and see top-tier event production firsthand. For new members, I highly recommend making a plan to attend at least one. The shared experiences and industry insights gained at these events are invaluable.
MPI has been more than just an industry association; it has been a catalyst for growth, learning, and meaningful connections. For anyone considering membership, the key is to get involved — whether through committees, sponsorships, or networking. The more you put into MPI, the more you’ll get out of it, making it a true Return on Involvement.
