MPIGNY 30/30
Message from Our President

Hello –

It is hard to comprehend how quickly this year has passed us by. Before we know it, it’s going to be 2022! Before that happens, we will be gathering in-person along with HSMAI and other industry organizations to celebrate the holiday season. Please keep an eye on our social channels and your email for a save-the-date announcement, which we expect to happen by early next week. We ALL deserve a great night to gather and reflect on how far we have progressed in one year.

On Nov. 21, we have an opportunity to gather as a group at The Race to Deliver, benefiting God’s Love We Deliver. It is a 4-mile run/walk in Central Park. We always have a great time bonding as a group outside of our usual events, and the beauty of the park in any season is not to be missed. To register as a part of our team, please use this link. If you are not able to join, please consider supporting our team with a donation.

As you know, our chapter runs on the dedication and passion of our volunteer members. We have several opportunities available across all facets of the chapter. Whether you want to learn a new skill or hone an existing one, whether you have an hour or lots of time on your hands, we want you to be involved with our community. Committee descriptions and more information can be found here.

Lastly, on behalf of the entire board we hope all of you, your families and friends near or far have a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving. We are all thankful for you and that we are in this community together.

Yours in hospitality –
Laura

The Next 30...And Beyond

MPI Greater New York Chapter is proud to partner with Together We Rise on Tuesday, Dec. 14 for a virtual service project — decorating Sweet Cases. When children enter foster care, they are usually given two trash bags to hold their belongings. The Sweet Case program provides duffle bags and basic necessities to help ease this problem, showing children in foster care that they are supported and loved.

Together We Rise is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization comprising motivated young adults and former foster youth. Their vision is to improve the lives of children in foster care, who often find themselves forgotten and neglected by the public. They collaborate with individuals, companies and community partners to bring resources to foster youth and use service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.

The CSR Committee will host a Zoom meeting for participants to network and decorate the panels together online. Registration for the event will open very soon. Please stay tuned!

The Past 30...

Last Tuesday night, MPIGNY held a pop up After Six Mix at the beautiful Fogo de Chao in Midtown. We are continuing to see a nice turnout as more and more people are returning to in-person events. It is always gratifying to have new potential members join our events and walk away with a memorable experience!

A huge thank you to Benjamin Maddy and the staff at Fogo de Chao for their incredible hospitality, going above and beyond with their generous food and beverage offerings. The venue is in a perfect location with several different private space options. Overall, there was great energy in the room, and much fun was had by all!

Please join us for our Annual Auction and Mixology event tonight at Hard Rock Cafe New York!

Last Wednesday, Oct. 27, MPIGNY hosted "Keeping It Real with MPIGNY," another highly informative education session led by an outstanding cast of industry experts.

Our moderator, Bernard Toliver, Renaissance Meetings & Special Events, was joined by:

  • Jeania Davis, director of meetings & events, National Alliance to End Homelessness
  • Cathy Diem, director of sales, Hilton Worldwide
  • Carrie Holmes, director, conferences & meetings, The Association of Junior Leagues Intl
  • Molly Kievit, senior director of campus sales, Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Association
  • George Ntim, market director of diplomatic & community relations, NYC Marriott Hotels, and chairman of the board, NYSHTA
  • Gary Pagano, vice president-special events, ViacomCBS

It was a great evening of education! The panelists shared their real-life experiences about how they dealt with ever-changing COVID protocols, supply chain challenges and negotiating new contracts. The conversation was engaging and the “food for thought” abundant, with so many great takeaways for moving events forward.

The overarching takeaway? There is no playbook for everything we will deal with, but one thing we can be certain of: Building relationships and trust will be the key to helping us move forward together.

Toliver closed with this familiar line from the movie “Hidden Figures,” “We all get there together, or we don’t get there at all.” Now that’s ‘Keeping It Real’!

If you missed it, you can access a recording of the webinar here and a one-page takeaway here.

If you are not familiar with EI, it is the New England Chapter’s premier educational conference offering engaging keynote speakers and innovative educational sessions. As you may know, London Convention Bureau has graciously sponsored a number of scholarships to cover the cost of a one-year planner membership to MPI. With many of our colleagues still reeling from the effects of the past 18 months, we want to be sure you know that there are still several scholarships available for qualified planners.

At MPIGNY, our members are family, and in challenging times, we believe in taking care of our own. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial hardships many are experiencing as a result, MPIGNY has set up a community support fund to provide monetary grants to our colleagues who need it most. If you are in need of assistance during this or any of life's more difficult moments, we may be able to help.
