During the MCAC mid-year meetings in Ottawa last week, MCAC delegates partnered with CIPH and spent a "Day on the Hill" lobbying our federal political and bureaucratic leaders for support in enacting Federal Prompt Payment Legislation. MCAC Cheif Executive Officer Pierre Boucher shared news of the introduction of the Federal Prompt Payment for Construction Work Act today! After the second reading, MCAC will appear before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. Picture to the left is Manitoba Conservative Senator Donald Plett with MCAC President Jack Bavis and CIPH Chairman Allen Taylor.

The City of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the launch of a new set of features for the City’s Permits Online system which revamp the way requests for occupancy are submitted and processed.

Moving forward, once a Building Permit that requires an Occupancy Permit is issued, the building permit applicant will be notified via email of the documents required to obtain occupancy. These documents can now be submitted online directly into the Occupancy Permit by anyone linked to that permit. Additionally, all registered Permits Online users can view the list of required documents well in advance of Life Safety Tests and Occupancy.

We believe this new process will be more transparent and will reduce denied occupancy requests.

Keynote and Business Session

As a growing family business, Cooper Canada bought competitors, went public, became unionized, imported, exported to 20 countries, opened an offshore factory in Barbados, grew to over 2,800 employees…and, in the end, sold to the wrong people. Donald will share important lessons in what he calls "from great to gone!"

Managing any business today is tough and getting tougher. We’re all faced with more demanding customers, more and stronger competition, increased complexity, faster change and shrinking margins. In addition, great employees are hard to find and keep - and that problem won’t go away any time soon. Donald Cooper delivers the "straight goods" on how to create compelling customer value, clarity of purpose and long-term profitability with the session on how to “Accelerate your Business.”

Each attendee will receive access to Donald’s complete set of "Business Assessment and Management Implementation Tools." Attendees will also have an opportunity to sign up for a 30-minute Biz Coaching Session with Donald. There are four spots left. Sign up today!

Dear Wise Wayne,

I am a mid-size ICI mechanical contractor. As a Manitoba resident and business owner, it is great to see Premier Pallister's government following through on their election promise to reduce the Provincial Sales Tax to 7 percent!  I'm not quite sure how this will impact projects I am currently working on or bidding on for future. I love the fact the government is following through on an election promise! How do I navigate the transition? Do you have resources that I could refer to?

Dear Lost in Transition,

I tend to rely on my CFO for managing these issues; however, even after reviewing the Provincial notice outling the PST Rate Reduction Transition Rules (found below), we were left with questions.  MCAM has arranged Tax Expert Richard Girouard of BDO to provide a PST Transition Workshop exclusively for MCAM Members. Email Yasmine at yasmine@mcamb.ca to register for the April 17 workshop, to be held at 8:30 AM.

Signed - Wise Wayne

WATER...

• How much do we have?

• How much do we really use?

• How do we use it and how can we save it?

We have loads of water in Manitoba, so why should we care?
