BREAKING NEWS: Bill S-224 passes second reading

Understandably pleased at this development, Senator Plett issued the following statement after the vote:

Tonight, Bill S-224 passed the second reading vote in the Senate. This is an important step towards securing promptness in payment for trade contractors in Canada.

This is a non-partisan issue and it is unfortunate that some would put politics in the way of a swift passage at second reading. However, it is my sincere hope that the bill will pass through committee and third reading debates quickly, so that we can move it forward to the House of Commons.

Canada’s trade contractors have waited long enough. Delayed payments in the construction industry remain the number one reason contractors go out of business in Canada. As a former contractor, I know firsthand how damaging delays in payment can be to the contractor and throughout the contractual chain. I am thrilled to bringing this long overdue solution forward.

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada congratulates Senator Plett on his work, and looks forward to helping get this much-needed piece of legislation passed at third reading in the Senate of Canada as soon as possible.
