KSHE Update

Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers

President's Message

Today’s a GREAT day to be a Kentuckian, particularly if you’re a Kentucky basketball fan. I’m writing this message on Wednesday, November 6th. Last night, the #2 Cats beat the #1 Michigan State Spartans on opening day, 69-62. The #2 Louisville Cardinals spanked Miami 87-74. The WKU Hilltoppers smoked Tennessee Tech, 76-64. Turning now to the statewide gubernatorial election results…nevermind.

What I really want to do is to encourage you. Healthcare facilities leadership is not for wimps. Working with limited staffing, no capital, aging facilities, unannounced credentialing surveys, and ridiculous expectations can be draining. But you keep hanging in there and coming back the next day, and the next. Sometimes it might feel like you’re not winning, but you are. Every day that you decide to come back to work and make good, well-informed decisions, you help take care of patients. Every day you come to work and put a smile on, dig in and help address a difficult mechanical problem, you make it easier for your team. Every day you sit with a co-worker and listen as he or she shares a personal tragedy they are dealing with, you make your team stronger. Every day you don’t accept that “it will never get better” and you find a way to make it better …you win.

ASHE has rolled out a new, FREE energy dashboard to better track utility usage and identify savings potential as part of the Energy to Care program. The Energy to Care Dashboard is designed with user interaction in mind. The highly visual tool will allow users to see their energy performance and benchmarking at a glance. The dashboard works in conjunction with ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager, so no duplicate utility bill entry. The new site has consolidated the location of helpful tools under the “Education Tools” tab. Resources include ideas of where to start, a benefits calculator that calculates the financial and environmental outcomes for reducing energy usage, as well as free online courses focused on energy. The new dashboard will make it easier to participate in the KSHE Energy Derby also! For more assistance, please reach out to Christy Fetsch or Spencer Hammond, Sustainability Liaisons for the chapter.

Sustainability Spotlight
Annually ASHE hosts a competition among hospitals and other healthcare facilities to save energy and protect the climate, known as Energy to Care. To create local interest, KSHE has created its own competition, The Energy Derby, to increase efforts in hospitals statewide to reduce excessive energy use. Energy reduction is driven through improvements in energy efficiency with help from KSHE, ASHE, and the Energy to Care program. The member facilities that shed the most energy consumption will be recognized.

In 2019, KSHE is offering energy benchmarking support and a free energy assessment to members to assist facilities that may be limited on resources.
