SHRM Foundation Innovation Grants support SHRM state councils and chapters working to improve their communities and build inclusive organizations.  In 2020, the SHRM Foundation will award five grants of up to $10,000 each for programs or services that have practical and measurable effects on building awareness of the value veterans bring to the workforce or building the skills and abilities of HR professionals to attract, hire and retain veterans.  Awards may be granted to an existing program that is ready for expansion, or for new projects that will be implemented within six months of the award date.

The application opened on January 15, closes on March 1, and winners will be announced on May 15.

Advancing The Profession
In the spring of 2019, we rolled out a brand new, agile wellbeing initiative. We have a new Wellbeing Director for 2020, Jeri Dembrak, and she is currently creating a roadmap for this year and the following two years for us to provide the tools and resources for all of our members to create healthy workplaces.

Last year, we asked you all for fifteen minutes and rolled out a success toolkit based on smoking cessation.  Organizations that qualified and completed the toolkit were eligible to receive an award. We also invite you to still submit your surveys and to participate.

Please share the link to the toolkit and invite others to click and participate. The deadline for all submissions will be April 30th
We have created a full 1-hour program, which has been submitted for SHRM and HRCI recertification credits, which will be povided at no cost. If you are still planning your 2020 programming, please hold a spot for this essential program! More information to come.
In December 2019, we shared a challenge to join SHRM’s A-Team. In true HR Florida fashion - we won! As promised, the $500 Amazon gift card furnished by Emily Dickens, Corporate Secretary, Chief of Staff and Head, Government Affairs at SHRM, will be used in our fundraising efforts for the SHRM Foundation. Thank you for sharing the A-Team information with your chapters and colleagues, joining, and getting involved!

If you haven’t already done so, please take a momet to sign up for the A-Team. SHRM’s Member Advocacy team will be sending out periodic emails with your state’s position in the standings and we are looking forward to a competitive race that will conclude at year’s end.
In the spirit of continued competition…SHRM presents a new challenge for 2020:

SHRM’s A-Team is growing and aims to have more than 20,000 members by the end of 2021. Though it is important we educate members on workplace policy through A-Team participation, it’s also important that we give members the skills, training and resources needed to effectively advocate for solid workplace policy and sound strategy within their organizations. Realizing that this type of professional development is core to the work of HR professionals, we developed Advocacy@Work.

Advocacy@Work is a brand new, two-day immersive training and practical experience for attendees to learn how to use their voice to change workplace public policy at the national, state, and local levels. It provides attendees the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and learn how advocacy can make an impact on both policy and within your workplace. This event will not only provide members insight into workplace public policy, but also how to use persuasive storytelling to impact change in their organizations.

Advocacy@Work will be held in Washington, DC on March 15-17th. Please encourage your chapter members and colleagues to attend.  The state with the largest percentage of attendees will be recognized and provided an award.

We encourage each chapter to send their legislative director or an alternate. Invest in yourself, invest in your local members — register now for Advocacy@Work.

If you have any questions regarding the A-Team or Advocacy@Work, please reach out to Bailey Yeager at bailey.yeager@shrm.org.

The past few years have shown a mass media uprising against sexual harassment, largely through the #MeToo movement. Research has supported the sterotype of harassers as males with authoritative power over their victims. For organizations, this places a spotlight on male managers and executives, specifically, as they have hierarchical dominance over their subordinates. In this climate, it is vital that organizations recognize that sexual harassment is a prominent issue with serious consequences that can result from a failure to repspond to prevent it.
