David Martin, Ph.D. will be retiring after 38 years as executive director of the Georgia Council on Economic Education, effective June 20, 2017. The Georgia Council was founded in 1972; Martin joined the staff in 1979 and became its first full-time executive director in 1982. Martin said the organization will be halfway through its 2016-2018 campaign, making it a good time to step down.

He plans to spend more time with his grandchildren. Congratulations, Dr. Dave, and best wishes for your retirement!

 
Gary Wheat will join the Macon-Bibb County CVB team on January 3, succeeding former CEO Monica Smith. Gary is relocating from Aurora, CO, where he served as CEO of Visit Aurora, a destination-marketing organization he launched in 2010. We look forward to working with Gary and the rest of Team Macon for the 2017 GSAE Annual Meeting, May 31-June 2.
 
Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) received one of only two Chapter Public Relations Awards presented in 2016 by Associated General Contractors of America for their workforce development campaign. The campaign, One School, One Instructor, One Student, You, builds interest in construction skilled trade careers with grassroots efforts that begin in schools all across Georgia. AGC Georgia’s leadership, including Mike Dunham, CEO, accepted the award during an AGC of America gala hosted in Washington, DC, for representatives from all 92 AGC chapters. Jim Fowler, CAE, President, and Russ Webb, Vice President, Atlanta/Georgia Apartment Association, are proud to share that the Atlanta Apartment Association’s (AAA) 29th Annual Food-A-Thon raised enough food items and money this year to provide 7.87 million meals to hungry families in metro Atlanta and north Georgia through its partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The record amount is an increase from last year’s Food-A-Thon, which provided 7.29 million meals. The event is believed to be the largest food-and-fund drive in the United States. Read more.
 
Kamilah Lewis and Wendell Greene were married October 7, 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia. The ceremony and reception took place at The Stave Room at American Spirit Works. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Anthony R. Scott Jr., step-father of the groom. The couple celebrated their nuptial in Saint Lucia. 

The bride and groom are both graduates of Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, Athens. Kamilah is the Director of Training and Workforce at the American College of Rheumatology in Atlanta, GA. Wendell is a Distribution Manager for ULINE in Buford, GA.
 
The Athens CVB recently presented their annual Hospitality Awards, recognizing the outstanding work of individuals who've made a positive impact on the Athens-Clarke County visitor experience. The Partner of the Year Award was presented to Abby Hicks, Director of Sales and Assistant General Manager, Hotel Indigo Athens. This award honors a CVB partner who recognizes the value of working together, understands synergy and embodies the hospitality aspect of tourism to its fullest degree. Read more.
 
Nick Arnold has accepted the position of Senior Sales Manager for the Athens CVB, left open due to Missy Brandt Wilson's recent promotion to Director of Sales. Prior to joining the CVB, Nick spent almost three years at The Classic Center leading sponsorship sales and assisting with marketing initiatives. Nick graduated with a master's degree in sports management and policy from the University of Georgia in 2013, after receiving his undergraduate degree in 2006. 
 
Brandon Nichols has accepted a promotion to Director of Sales and moved to the Hyatt Place Atlanta/Cobb Galleria. Brandon was formerly with Hyatt Regency Suites Atlanta NW; Katie Clark, Director of Sales, is GSAE's new contact there.
 

Panama City Beach's first Starwood property is set to open this fall to high acclaim. Tania Lynn, Sales Manager, is delighted to share that Sheraton Bay Point Resort has undergone a $30M transformation and will feature 60,000 sq. ft. of flexible indoor/outdoor meeting space and 320 guestrooms. Located on a secluded stretch along the Emerald Coast, the resort boasts a spa, 36 holes of golf and various water activities.

 
Amelia Island has once again landed among the Top 10 U.S. Islands in the 2016 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. Finishing in the #4 spot among islands including Maui, Kauai and Oahu, only one other Florida island – Longboat Key – was named in the 29th annual competition. Registration fee for the first association executive attendee – $349; corporate suppliers – $409; additional attendees from the same organization – $249 each; room rates at Macon Marriott City Center Hotel – $129 run of house.

Nonprofits across Georgia will again rally the state’s collective philanthropic spirit on November 17 for Georgia Gives Day. Since the inaugural year in 2012, more than 2,000 nonprofits across the state have raised a combined $9.3 million through GA Gives Day.

Donate to the GSAE Foundation today to ensure the future of the association management profession. Since it’s inception in 2002, our internship grant program has helped introduce 30 college-age interns to the association management and hospitality professions.
