General Electric’s Additive Manufacturing Division recently shared a story about how its GE Additive electron beam melting (EBM) technology is impacting the use of titanium in manufacturing cycling parts. The UK-based engineering firm Metron Additive Engineering is known for designing and producing handlebars used by Olympic cyclists and competitive racers through additive manufacturing. The company has already produced over 100 handlebars for high-end bikes.

The world has been talking about Industry 4.0 since 2012; The digital transformation is set to disrupt nearly every process across industry. However, many businesses are reluctant to take the next steps in transforming their manufacturing businesses into an advanced manufacturing business, and for good reason. The technology is disruptive to the processes these companies have been using for years and can be an expensive endeavor. 
 
3D Printing Industry
Two Joint Innovation Projects (JIPs) seeking to establish guidelines for the production and qualification of additive manufactured parts for the oil and gas and maritime industries, has concluded. The JIPs, organized by DNV GL, an international accredited registrar and classification society, and comprised of 20 different partners, involved 2 years of intensive work and discussion. Some of the firms involved include BP, Shell, Total, Siemens, SLM Solutions, Sandvik, Additive Industries and more. Their goal was to develop guidelines to help qualify parts produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) processes.

Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler have started telling non-factory employees to work remotely in order to avoid contracting and spreading the coronavirus, as the world comes to grips with a growing pandemic. Factory workers at plants in the US, however, are being told to remain in place — despite the United Auto Workers union announcing Thursday that a Fiat Chrysler employee at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plant in Indiana tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

COVID-19 has caused serious disruption to manufacturers’ ability to produce products and fill orders on a timely basis, impeding performance of countless supply chains. Manufacturing facilities have closed or reduced capacity, airlines have suspended or reduced flights, ports have closed, containers have shipped less than full, and ocean vessels sit on “delayed status.” This has seriously impacted cross-border distribution of products, including chemicals, commodities, electronics, construction materials, computer hardware, phones, food products and textiles. Accordingly, purchasers of products made, distributed and delivered by those manufacturers and transportation firms are likely to be unable to satisfy or to be significantly delayed in fulfilling their contractual obligations to their customers.

The Pegasus P-400T is a lightweight reconnaissance and attack plane — and, according to the company, is an entirely original design, created using cutting-edge design software produced in-house. The plane can reach a cruising speed of 280 mph and a top speed of over 340mph, powered by its 400hp turbocharged engine. It has a range of 1,400 miles with a five-hour flight capacity.
