A recall notice has been issued for Sunjoy Oakmont LP fire pit tables. An incorrectly installed burner kit hose can melt and ignite, posing a fire hazard. Consumers should immediately stop using the fire pit tables and contact Sunjoy Industries Co. Ltd. to receive a free replacement burner kit and installation instructions.

The Régie du batîment du Québec has made changes to the Filling Station Tank Location Guideline.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has posted an information package and survey on the use of Electronic Logging Devices in Ontario. The ministry is reaching out to determine the best path forward to implement ELDs for intra-provincial carriers (those who operate within Ontario only).

On November 1, 2020, Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority announced that their 
Operating Engineers Alternate Rules were approved by the Minister of Government and Consumer Services to supplement the existing Operating Engineers Ontario Regulation 219/01. These Alternate Rules provide organizations with two alternative paths to achieve safety and compliance outcomes. The Operating Engineers regulation remains in place and the Alternate Rules do not replace it.

Transport Canada temporary certificates that were put in place to allow industry to forgo certain training and inspection requirements that were difficult to achieve due to COVID-19 challenges are set to expire. BE PREPARED – Renew your TDG training certificates with PTI’S Transportation of Dangerous Goods – Propane/LPG Specific – 100-03. This course is now fully online, including the exam. 

On October 23, 2020 Ontario’s Technical Standards & Safety Authority posted the 2020 Code Adoption Document for propane storage and handling. This move signals the authority’s intention to proceed with adopting the National Code through the CAD for all regulated sectors, providing businesses with consistency across the country by aligning Ontario with other provinces and minimizing Ontario-specific amendments.

The federal government has introduced Bill C-9, An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act (Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy and Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy), which would implement new, targeted support to help hard-hit businesses. These measures are designed to help businesses get through the second wave of the virus.

The Alberta government is implementing additional health measures. Starting Nov. 13, all restaurants, bars, lounges and pubs in regions under enhanced status must cease liquor sales by 10 p.m. and close by 11 p.m. The restriction will remain in place until Nov. 27. Additional public health measures will also be implemented in all regions under an enhanced status, including limiting the number of employees in offices and no social gatherings within homes or outside of the community.

As of November 12, the entire province of Manitoba moved to the critical level (red) due to rising COVID-19 cases. Fines for breaching or failing to comply with public health or emergency orders have recently been increased to $1,296 for individuals and $5,000 for corporations. The new restrictions will be in effect province-wide.

The Manitoba government has amended the Employment Standards Code so more workers can take protected leave due to the COVID-19 pandemic and apply for federal benefits. Eligible workers can now apply for the newly available CRSB, which offers $500 per week for up to two weeks, and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit, which provides workers $500 per week for up to 26 weeks to take time off to care for a family member. 

Ontario is providing more than $600,000 to the Office of the Worker Adviser and Office of the Employer Adviser to help make it easier for workers and small businesses to navigate the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board's compensation system. Through these two adviser offices non-unionized workers and small businesses will be able to access advice, education, and representation at the WSIB and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal.
