AB: Alberta Bill 19 Comes into Effect

Print this Article

Alberta Bill 19 – An Act to Protect Gas and Convenience Store Workers – came into effect on June 1. The CPA has consulted with the Alberta Ministry and Department of Labour on the bill to confirm that it is setting parameters around the pre-payment for fuel at gas stations and other retail fuelling outlets.

Bill 19 requires that employers of these establishments ensure that workers are trained in a workplace violence prevention plan. For work sites open between 11pm and 5am, the Bill specifies that:

  • there must be a time lock safe at the site that cannot be opened between these hours;
  • the quantity of high-value items such as cash, lottery tickets and tobacco is limited; and
  • the worksite is monitored by video surveillance.
