In November 2020, the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, released a discussion paper on hydrogen technology for stakeholder consideration and comment.

The 20-page paper outlines the Ontario government’s rationale for investigating the benefits and challenges of hydrogen technology. Ontario considers hydrogen fuel technology a potential long-term way to address climate change and air quality while creating growth opportunities for industry.

In a letter to Environment Minister Jeff Yurek regarding the discussion paper, CPA President and CEO Nathalie St-Pierre cautioned against investing significant public funds and resources in pursuit of a singular, emerging, long-term energy technology and outlined specific areas where immediate government support for the propane industry could yield positive near-term environmental benefits.

She also reminded the minister that propane has an important role to play in the fight against climate change, “As the Ontario government dedicates further resources to the development of a hydrogen plan and infrastructure, I would ask that you continue to recognize and support the important role Ontario’s propane sector plays in helping to realize the province’s climate change goals.”
