These numbers represent 615 new CMPs since January 1, 2016.

2.3 new CMPs a day are born into the CMP family and community.

1,503 have recertified more than 3 times, proving our designation grows with a person throughout their career and life.

The CMP is the most widely accepted, respected, acknowledged designation in our industry and profession. While the CMP tests our knowledge, the exam itself does not make a CMP – what makes a CMP is the quality of our work. The work we do represents the value of the CMP. Our experience represents the relevance of the CMP. Our expertise represents the rigor of the CMP.

I serve on the CMP Governance Commission with 14 other CMP colleagues. We have challenged ourselves and CIC staff to ensure rigor, relevance, and value remain front and center of the mission, vision and work of the CMP. We are committed to keep it competitive and the industry designation of choice with event and hospitality professionals and employers.

The CMP is not a destination nor end result of our career, rather I believe it is the beginning of an amazing journey. As you know, when you pass the CMP, you feel relief, joy, and most of all pride – proud to prove to yourself that you can put your knowledge and experience to the test and pass – proud that you fulfilled a commitment to yourself – proud that you join the ranks of thousands of CMP colleagues around the world. You have confidence and self-assurance that you are planning great meetings and events.

Many of our leaders in our industries have their CMP. Many of us become role models, mentors to others. Whether formal or informal CMPs represent current and future leaders for our industry – that’s not coincidental at all. CMPs shape our industry and profession like no other designation, I know this for a fact. When I worked with the Department of Labor in building our own sector for Event Management in the Workforce Competency Model – the CMP was instrumental.

I want to ask you to think about how you can shape the future. Whether it’s through a leadership position in your work or for one of our industry professional organizations, being a role model and mentor to others who want to become a CMP, or sharing your knowledge and skills with others. Share your expertise. Share the value of being a CMP.

We are the CMP. We are the Future.

Peace. Janet Sperstad, CMP
