CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update

Many members were first time attendees at last week's California Trucking Day including young professional members that particpate in CTA's NextGen Program as well as owner-operators from CTA member companies. A special thank you to Yandell Truckaway and GSC Logistics for bringing their owner-operators to this event. The hot topic of discussion during the office visits was AB 5, the bill that will put owner-operators out of business, so their stories and experiences made a lasting impression on the legislators and their staff.
Last week, Assembly Bill (AB) 5 was heard in the Assembly Labor Committee. AB 5 codifies the Dynamex decision into law, expanding the decision beyond wage orders. If passed, the owner-operator business model would effectively be eliminated within California.
Compliance and Regulatory News
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) International Roadcheck will take place June 4-6. Over that 72-hour period, commercial motor vehicle inspectors in jurisdictions throughout North America will conduct inspections on commercial motor vehicles and drivers. Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. This year's focus is steering and suspension systems. While checking vehicle compliance is always part of the North American Standard Inspection Program, CVSA is highlighting steering components and suspension systems this year as a reminder of their importance to highway safety.

Starting on April 1, CVSA's 2019 North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria is now in effect. The out-of-service criteria is the pass-fail criteria for roadside safety inspections. It identifies critical safety violations that render the driver, vehicle and/or motor carrier out of service until the condition(s) or violation(s) can be corrected or repaired.
