CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update
This week, CTA submitted comments to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) on behalf of its Intermodal Conference members regarding the requested changes to the current discussion agreement governing the operation of the Pier Pass "off-peak" gate program at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach ("Pier Pass").
A few weeks back longtime CTA member Reeve Trucking brought to our attention the enormous fee the City of La Palma was charging haulers that needed to obtain an extra legal permit to go through their city. The city was charging a "minimum fee" of $326.40 for a transportation permit. The city was charging a "minimum fee" of $326.40 for a transportation permit. This is only $310.40 more than the state imposed fee set by Caltrans which is currently $16.00.
On April 18th, CTA sent an update to its Agricultural Carrier members informing them that the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA)was still in the process of publishing its Final Rule for the Use of Alternative Cargo Securement Requirements for Agriculture. FMCSA has yet to publish it, with that in mind, CTA worked with the California Highway Patrol on obtaining another exemption for agriculture commodity haulers in California.

Summer is approaching and the past few summers have shown that the risk of heat illness from high temperatures is one of the most serious challenges to the safety and health of workers. Heat Illness prevention standards apply to the trucking industry and violations of the standards can lead to large fines and employee health issues. Cal/OSHA, will be presenting on the health effects of heat, how to respond to symptoms, and how to prevent heat exhaustion. The final day to turn in applications for the Northern CA Truck Driving Championships is Friday, May 11 by 5:00 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted. The California Truck Driving Championships are organized to recognize and promote safe driving and professionalism in the transportation industry.
CTA Highlights
On April 28th, The American Truck Historical Society Truck show (Central California Chapter) held its annual antique truck show in Plymouth, CA at the Amador County Fairgrounds. In addition to the many classic, restored trucks that were on display, CTA Past Presidents Ed Rocha (President 1992) and Al Nunes (President 2004) showcased their impeccable antique trucks at the show. The ATHS’ event in Amador County is held annually on the last Saturday in April. To view pictures from the show, click here
