City of La Palma Revises its Extra Legal Permit Fee

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

A few weeks back longtime CTA member Reeve Trucking brought to our attention the enormous fee the City of La Palma was charging haulers that needed to obtain an extra legal permit to go through their city. The city was charging a "minimum fee" of $326.40 for a transportation permit. This is only $310.40 more than the state imposed fee set by Caltrans which is currently $16.00. As has been reported many times over the years, per California Vehicle Code Section 35795 cities and counties are prohibited from charging more than the state of California does for a transportation permit. Upon receiving word from Reeve Trucking, CTA sent a letter to the City advising them of the law. Earlier this week, the city responded to the letter and informed CTA that upon City Council approval they will be revising their current fee from $326.40  to $16.00. The City told CTA that it will more than likely be approved. The permit fee of $16.00 will be effective July 1st, however until then the city will only be charging the state fee ($16.00). If you are an extra legal hauler who needs to obtain a permit from the City of La Palma feel free to reference the letter CLICK HERE.

Be sure to let CTA know if you come across other local municipalities that are over charging you for a transportation permit. It’s against the law. Thank you to Reeve Trucking for making CTA aware!. For more information please contact Eric Sauer at esauer@caltrux.org
