The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) Board of Directors has approved the 2018 Top Research Priorities as identified by ATRI's Research Advisory Committee (RAC). ATRI's RAC developed the list of recommended research topics at its meeting held in Dallas in March and the ATRI Board vetted and approved that list at its meeting last week.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB or Board) will conduct a public hearing at the time and place noted below to consider approving for adoption the proposed amendments to the Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection Program (HDVIP) and Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP).

As was reported on March 27, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was going to be conducting a public hearing on Thursday April 5 regarding the rulemaking process to formally adopt the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rule for interstate operators that operate in California.

Summer is approaching and the past few summers have shown that the risk of heat illness from high temperatures is one of the most serious challenges to the safety and health of workers. Heat Illness prevention standards apply to the trucking industry and violations of the standards can lead to large fines and employee health issues. Cal/OSHA, will be presenting on the health effects of heat, how to respond to symptoms, and how to prevent heat exhaustion. The final day to turn in applications for the Southern CA Truck Driving Championships is THIS Friday, April 13 by 5:00 p.m., no late applications will be accepted. The California Truck Driving Championships are organized to recognize and promote safe driving and professionalism in the transportation industry. This competitive event is designed to give drivers a chance to test their job skills under standardized conditions using vehicles that are the tools of their trade.

The California Trucking Association is pleased to announce the launch of its new Small Fleet Program. The program has been developed based on member feedback to ensure that smaller, commercial fleets can compete more efficiently in the trucking industry by leveraging the member resources that are of greatest priority and need to them.

Frank C. Alegre passed away on March 25, 2018 in Lodi, California. Frank was born March 2, 1935 in Stockton, California to Joe and Vera Alegre. Raised in Tracy, California, he graduated from Tracy High School in 1950. Frank worked on the family dairy, and his father gave him the choice to go to college or get a new car. He chose the new car. Frank met his wife, Helen Mayer, of Lodi in 1955 in Stockton, California. They soon eloped and were married on October 22, 1955. After working on the dairy for a couple of years, Frank decided it was not for him. He became a salesman for Stockton Hay and Grain and then Happyholm Feed in Lodi.
