The current onslaught of digital technologies offers the promise to transform supply chain management and quickly advance organizations past their competitors, but few in the field fully understand how best to develop a strategy among the upheaval of so many new options.

"A SAVVY Guide to the Digital Supply Chain," the latest report from the UT Global Supply Chain Institute, outlines several emerging trends at top companies and provides a framework for evaluating technologies and creating a digital supply chain strategy. It also defines the most prominent digital technologies for supply chain managers, including artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, big data, blockchain, the internet of things, and predictive and prescriptive analytics.

The report specifically identifies artificial intelligence and cognitive computing, coupled with predictive and prescriptive analytics, as dramatically changing the role of individual employees in managing routine decisions. Contributions from Kevin O’Marah, chief content officer at SCM World, further reveal the potential for work transformation and managing the digital transition.

A SAVVY Guide to the Digital Supply Chain was sponsored by IBM and is the second installment of the Technology in the Supply Chain white paper series from UT’s Global Supply Chain Institute at the Haslam College of Business.

Lead the Workforce of Tomorrow? Four Trends Change Everything!

EDGE attendees are welcome are to attend this session led by Anne Loehr, Generational Guru, Author & Transformational Leader

How Are You Preparing to Lead the Workforce of Tomorrow? Learn the four trends that will change everything in the workforce. More than 9.4 million firms are women-owned, and the old minority is the new majority where 92 percent of U.S. population growth is attributed to ethnic groups. Baby boomers aren’t the only members of the workforce fleeing the scene. Women are also leaving the corporate workforce and forming their own firms. Why is this important? With women leaving the workforce, and the baby boomer retirement exodus on the horizon, what exactly will the future workforce look like? What strategy do you have in mind for retaining your top female talent? Anne will engage you in an interactive workshop-style session based on four demographic trends that are “shape-shifting” our future workforce.

For our 2018 Rainmakers, success isn’t just about fame and fortune. It’s also about making a contribution to the logistics field and advancing the profession.

Some measure success by salaries and titles. Others use a different yardstick altogether. Take the eight professionals selected as our 2018 Rainmakers, for example. When asked about their proudest professional accomplishments, one cited the satisfaction of watching protégés go on to achieve greater glory, while others pointed to the teams they’ve built and led. "Nothing is more rewarding than making a difference in someone’s life by helping them develop their skills and realize their potential," wrote one honoree.

So who are these Rainmakers and how were they chosen? As in the past, DC Velocity selected the 2018 Rainmakers in concert with members of the magazine’s Editorial Advisory Board from candidates nominated by readers, board members, and previous Rainmakers and DCV Thought Leaders. This year’s selections represent different facets of the business – from practitioners to analysts to consultants to technology providers. But as the profiles on the following pages show, they’re united by a common goal of advancing the logistics and supply chain management profession.

If you’d like to nominate someone for our 2019 Rainmakers report, please send your suggestions to "DC Velocity’s" editorial director, David Maloney, at dmaloney@dcvelocity.com.
