I hope the uncertainty, fear, and negative impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic fade fast. The entire world has been affected, yet we have seen an incredible surge of collaboration, innovation, and planning.
I am an optimist and always look for the silver lining, and one of them is this ... we have seen the words "supply chain" become part of daily commentary on a mass scale. Those that had never uttered the terms before are now hyper-aware of things like inventory and demand planning and this cool thing we at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) know of as supply chain.
The awareness of what goes on within today's supply chain has changed and will prove beneficial to our industry and the professionals serving within it for a long time to come.
With the pandemic disrupting supply chains, industry professionals have an opportunity to create innovative solutions and rewrite the future supply chain landscape. All organizations, in all industries, in all parts of the world need to step up their confidence and competence in their supply chain activities.

The 2020 Third-Party Logistics Study was presented at the 2019 CSCMP EDGE conference. Here are key insights from a pre-coronavirus marketplace that still ring true today:
- When shippers turn to 3PLs for supply chain improvements, what is their biggest need? That would be technology. Top 3PLs have already built out a robust tech infrastructure that contains the right tools for the job.
- What are top challenges in the modern supply chain? E-commerce growth; economic uncertainty; the truck driver shortage; disruptive technologies; relationship necessities, namely supply chain alignment strategies; and competitive challenges.
- How analytics fit into the supply chain. The five most common referred-to types are: descriptive; diagnostic; predictive; prescriptive and using cognitive/artificial intelligence/machine learning, to identify patterns of activity. In the study 95% of shippers and 99% of 3PLs agree that analytics are a necessary element of 3PL expertise. But, only 26% of shippers and 27% of 3PLs are satisfied with current analytic capabilities. The issues rest with the ways to create clean and useful data, and insufficient resources to best utilize analytics.
- Why is there an analytics gap? A big roadblock is when the shipper and 3PL are not in total agreement on a strategic plan on the best use of analytics: what is the need and how to best serve it? Many shippers currently employ legacy systems.
- As geopolitical volatility affects global operations, supply chain finance is becoming critical. It revealed that 26% of shippers employ a supply chain finance professional at the vice president level; 31% report having someone with the director title. For shippers, their top supply chain finance costs are freight payment audit (72%), total landed cost (57%) and letters of credit (37%). For 3PLs, top supply chain finance costs are freight payment audit (71%), letters of credit (39%) and open accounts (36%).
- The greening of the supply chain continues on. The top reasons are regulatory requirements, public perception and cost savings. For shippers: optimization, such as route and load (76%); tracking and reporting emissions (42%); voluntary programs (38%) like the U.S. EPA SmartWay program; and the use of alternative fuels (16%). For 3PLs: optimization (78%); voluntary programs (63%); tracking and reporting emissions (39%); and using alternative fuels (19%).

While much of the global economy has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and the associated fallout, according to the March 2020 Logistics Managers’ Index
, the logistics (and particularly transportation) industry appear to be holding strong. The overall LMI score of 58.9 is the highest level we have read in a year. This is up significantly from February when it registered at an all-time low of 52.6. This breaks a long-running trend as prior to this reading, the lowest 11 scores in the history of the index have all occurred within the last 11 months. This breaks a two-year trend of near-constant decreases in the overall index.
This growth has been driven primarily by increases in Transportation Prices (up 16.54 to 65.5), and Inventory Levels (up 7.0 points to 55.4), both of these metrics had displayed contraction in February. Relatedly, both Warehousing and Transportation Capacity are down significantly, having dropped 17.0 points and 8.12 points respectively. The lack of capacity and increase in Transportation Prices is likely due the inability of retailers to keep staple goods on the shelves, and suppliers rushing to replenish them.
