Managing the constant change of today's global supply chains is all in a day’s work for supply chain professionals, but success doesn’t happen without thoughtful planning. Understanding the potential risks in your global supply chain requires knowledge of both industry changes as well as macroeconomic, political, and social issues.
CSCMP Awards and Recognition
The Young Professionals Emerging Leader Award was created to recognize up-and-coming leaders in the supply chain management field for their meaningful contributions to – and future influence on – the profession, and CSCMP is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 Emerging Leader Award:
The winners will be recognized on stage during the Opening General Session of CSCMP's EDGE Conference in Orlando, Florida on Monday, September 20, 2020. CSCMP's EDGE Conference is the largest event of its kind and the only event truly representing supply chain from end-to-end. For more information and registration details, visit cscmpedge.org.
CSCMP is soliciting original academic cases for its ever-expanding, online case library. CSCMP seeks classroom-ready cases that explore all logistics and supply chain issues involving supply chain strategy and operations, as well as supply chain analysis and decision making.
CSCMP has a special interest in cases which address topics such as last mile delivery, impacts of emerging technologies, sustainability, ethical considerations in supply chains, food safety, humanitarian logistics, warehouse management, and urban logistics. In addition, CSCMP prefers cases with a financial focus, with emphasis on an accompanying dataset/database. Finally, the interest in these topics could be enhanced by specific attention to placement in a setting outside of the United States.

While much of the global economy has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and the associated fallout, according to the March 2020 Logistics Managers’ Index, the logistics (and particularly transportation) industry appear to be holding strong. The overall LMI score of 58.9 is the highest level we have read in a year. This is up significantly from February when it registered at an all-time low of 52.6. This breaks a long-running trend as prior to this reading, the lowest 11 scores in the history of the index have all occurred within the last 11 months. This breaks a two-year trend of near-constant decreases in the overall index.
This growth has been driven primarily by increases in Transportation Prices (up 16.54 to 65.5), and Inventory Levels (up 7.0 points to 55.4), both of these metrics had displayed contraction in February. Relatedly, both Warehousing and Transportation Capacity are down significantly, having dropped 17.0 points and 8.12 points respectively. The lack of capacity and increase in Transportation Prices is likely due the inability of retailers to keep staple goods on the shelves, and suppliers rushing to replenish them.
