Union contractors, labor representatives, and other stakeholders in the unionized sector of the construction and maintenance industry expressed continued but reduced optimism regarding growth in early 2021 as compared to early 2020, according to the 2021 Union Craft Labor Supply Study recently released by The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC) and the Construction Labor Research Council (CLRC).

Heat-related illnesses accounted for 783 worker deaths and nearly 70,000 serious injuries in the United States from 1992 to 2016. And in 2018 alone, 3,950 workers experienced days away from work as a result of nonfatal injuries and illnesses from on-the-job heat exposure.
 
Construction employment in April remained below the pre-pandemic high set in February 2020 in 36 states and the District of Columbia, despite increases from March to April in 26 states, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of government employment data released recently. Association officials said that the sector’s recovery was being undermined by increases in materials prices, delays in receiving key construction supplies and labor shortages.

Almost every construction company owner, president or manager is busy — they never have enough time to finish everything on their plate. They tend to take on too many duties. They don’t delegate. The construction industry has been plagued by labor shortages for most of the past decade. Despite more than a decade of rising demand, total construction employment has yet to fully recover from the exodus of skilled workers in the wake of the 2008 recession.
 
Costs of ocean freight from Europe and Asia to the U.S. rose for the ninth straight month, with seasonal demand expected to cause further supply chain challenges and price increases.

After being in the building material distribution industry for 42 years, Chris J. Doyle, Sr. has recently announced his retirement. As a CISCA member since the 80s, Doyle has attended many memorable conventions at the Del Coronado, The Broadmoor, Vegas, Nashville and more.
