Food Processing Expo 2016 saw a record number of both attendees and exhibitors, Feb. 17-18, at the Sacramento Convention Center. Attendance at this popular annual event, produced by the California League of Food Processors (CLFP), has been growing steadily in recent years. This year the Expo attracted nearly 2,100 attendees and 270 exhibitors.

Expo kickoff breakfast speaker and Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert shared his extensive knowledge about current food trends. Lempert, who is a consumer trends analyst and a former food trends editor at NBC’s Today show, said Americans’ passion for food is at record levels with millennials being a driving force.

"People are more passionate about food now than we have ever seen in our lifetime," Lempert said. "They (the millennials) are our future. We need to capture them now so we can keep them for the rest of their lives."

The extensive Expo trade show floor featured a large range of equipment, supplies and services for food processors. Attendees also chose from a variety of educational sessions, including those on the Food Safety Modernization Act, labeling, packaging, energy savings and more. The Tomato Processing School was held the day prior to the Expo and provided a comprehensive look at the tomato processing business operation and associated practices.

The Expo also featured the lively CLFP Supplier Host Council Reception and Silent Auction, which raises funds for CLFP’s scholarship program. In 2015, CLFP awarded more than $35,000 in scholarship funds.

The Food Processing Expo represents the largest gathering of food processors in California. In 2017, the Expo will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center, Feb. 8-9, a week earlier than the usual dates.
