In 2000, Johnson & Johnson Medical Products introduced the Award of Excellence in Sterile Processing to recognize contributions to the Sterile Processing Profession by non-management sterile processing personnel. We did this because based on our observations while working with you in your hospital; it was evident that the front line workers significantly influenced change in sterile processing. This must be above and beyond their paid position or union position. Please consider nominating one of your peers or employees who have been involved in special projects, teaching, motivating or mentoring others, and developing or implementing innovative ideas. I would venture to guess that you have one of these people in your department. Thanks for taking the time to recognize these special people.

The complexity and temperature sensitivity of flexible endoscopes makes cleaning followed by sterilization/disinfection difficult. While sterilization may be optimal, the minimum acceptable standard for reprocessing endoscopes is high level disinfection (HLD). At all times, cleaning must precede high level disinfection. Endoscopic accessories do require sterilization. Whenever flexible endoscopes are reprocessed, those involved in the reprocessing must adhere to the validated protocol recommended by the manufacturer of the endoscope.

The Almonte General Hospital (AGH) has eight new pieces of equipment thanks to the generosity of the community. The hospital's Central Sterilization and Reprocessing (CSR) area now includes the following items: sterilizer, prep and pack table, endoscopy sink, a double sink, stainless steel work tables, state-of-the art scope storage cabinet with continual air flow, heat sealing station and a washer and disinfector. The planning for the project started well over a year ago with the construction happening over the summer. It was completed at the end of August. The total project cost $220,000, which was completely raised by the community through the AGH Foundation.
