Ontario

Given forecasted need for increased electricity supply, the Ontario government has asked Ontario Power Generation to work with the Ontario Waterpower Association to review opportunities for new hydroelectric development in Northern Ontario.  This request comes after the Ontario government recently amended key provisions of its Far North Act.

The review will update past evaluations of hydroelectric potential with new estimates on water availability, annual energy production potential, and life-cycle costs of building and operating new hydroelectric generation.  As part of the review, OPG was directed to engage with Indigenous communities and organizations to understand how Indigenous communities could benefit from future hydroelectric projects.
