Executive Director’s View

Coming back from the CCBO Annual Conference always leaves me feeling excited for more, and in full honesty a little bit exhausted too! Recently I’ve been reflecting on my time with CCBO, serving in various roles and having the privilege of attending many conferences over the years.

The first time I met many of you was at the 2013 CCBO Annual Conference in Palm Springs. While I had supported CCBO leading up to the conference planning, I was officially hired as the full time Managing Director just a few weeks before the conference started. My official start date coincided with the Board meeting that week where a lot of strategic decisions were being made on the future of the organization – no pressure, right?

All joking aside, it was an exciting time for CCBO. We had initiated a new strategic direction for the organization and we formed many of the committees that are now the driving force behind much of CCBO’s initiatives today – all while enjoying the gorgeous views of southern California and palm trees. Who can complain? I was eager to get back to the office and start on the work ahead.

I sit here today with just as much enthusiasm for the future, despite some challenges ahead. Over the years our members have continued to face budgetary restraints, funding cuts, and declining enrollment. Many community colleges are looking for alternative revenue streams and creative operational efficiencies to help offset these budgetary challenges. Regardless of what challenges may face today’s community colleges, our members – you – are the ones leading these efforts to bring creative solutions to your campuses and your students.

The CCBO community is stronger than ever and ready to help you take the next step forward in your own career and on your campus. Looking back over my time with CCBO, I can’t begin to share how much I’ve enjoyed dinner cruises on the San Antonio Riverwalk, trail running in Illinois, dancing at the end of Awards Banquets, and holding baby alligators in the exhibit hall with you all. But most of all, I reflect on the support and growth that CCBO has given me. I’ve learned so much from my CCBO colleagues and friends, and have built relationships that will last a lifetime. For that, I am very grateful.

The future of CCBO is in great hands under the leadership of Alisha and the rest of the Board. Please join them in being brand ambassadors and advocates for CCBO back in your own state groups and other networks. An exciting future lies ahead for the organization!
