Government Relations
The U.S. Department of Education posted another announcement via its IFAP website over this past weekend. The letter focused on the upcoming release of the GE Completers List files via NSLDS (see GE Electronic Announcement #74) and, most importantly, registering for two webinars in June. You MUST pre-register for these webinars.
  • The first webinar,"Reading Your Draft GE Completers List Files," will be offered June 2 and June 7.
  • The next webinar, "Submitting GE Completers List Corrections," will be offered June 14 and June 16.

  • Our current Call to Action, requesting legislative language in the appropriations process to include a GE delay, generated 1697 legislator connections. Again, thank you for your action and support in this piece of our strategy!
  • While these Call to Actions are easy to complete, your GRC needs your advocacy efforts to be of a different form in the next few weeks.
Step 1: Are you connecting with the employers of your graduates? Are you letting them know their workforce may diminish further if the GE regulations are implemented as planned? We are sure you have been doing this, but in case you haven’t, please do so now.

Step 2: Ask several employers of your graduates: How many licensed cosmetologists could they hire right now? How many will they need to hire in the next 12 months?

Step 3: Gather the specific data and share it with the AACS GRC Chairman Greg Jones by June 30, 2016. The GRC Leadership team may then reach out to you directly. Requesting that you and the employers of your graduates take this "workforce shortage" message directly to Members of Congress in your area, especially if you have a Member of Congress on the Appropriations, HELP and/or the Education & Workforce Committees.

As we head closer to the Memorial Day holiday, there are 20 state legislatures in session this week, including three – Arkansas, Utah and West Virginia – that are convening for a special session. In Arkansas, the special session is expected to focus on Governor Hutchinson’s highway funding plan. Utah and West Virginia will similarly focus on budget issues. Education funding and a concurrent resolution opposing the unilateral designation of a national monument in Utah are expected to be debated in Salt Lake City; and controversial tax proposals to close West Virginia’s $270 million budget deficit will be debated in Charleston. Find out more in this week’s update.

PR Tips
If you’re not already familiar with Snapchat, you should get acquainted. Snapchat is a mobile photo-messaging app that allows users to take photos and short videos that remain viewable to recipients for approximately 10 seconds; after that, the "Snap" disappears into the dark tubes of the interwebs, never to be seen again. To expand its services, Snapchat has added live text, chat and video calls between contacts, which has helped increase use of the application among younger audiences. Learn how you can use Snapchat for your school in this Entrepreneur article.
