Last week AACS member, Marinello Schools of Beauty, celebrated a win in the courtroom when a California federal judge dismissed a suit from three cosmetology and haircutting students who sought to represent a putative class of people claiming they should receive wages from their schools because they were more workers than pupils.

U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria determined on Friday that the three students had not proved that the educational benefit they had received from attending B&H Education Inc.'s Marinello Schools of Beauty was outweighed by the unpaid work they did. The three students, Jacqueline Benjamin, Bryan Gonzalez and Taiwo Koyejo, alleged that B&H violated the Fair Labor Standards Act and California and Nevada state labor laws by not paying them minimum wages and overtime pay.

Congratulations go out to 20 beauty school students and emerging hairstylists who are making a name for themselves in the industry. The names of 10 Fall 2015 Vidal Sassoon Professional Beauty Education "Basic" scholarship winners were just published in Modern Salon, along with the names of 10 up-and-coming hairstylists awarded "Advanced" scholarships. The application window for the next round of Vidal Sassoon Professional Beauty Education Scholarships opens February 1, 2016.

Why the Annual Performance Review is Going Extinct
Employees don’t need annual performance reviews to know how they stack up against their peers. This summer, GE announced it was abolishing its "rank and yank" system, which assigns employees a performance score relative to their peers and results in the lowest percentile getting fired. Other companies are rethinking their practices, too. Accenture’s 330,000 employees are undergoing what CEO Pierre Nanterme has called a "massive revolution" in which timely, personalized employee feedback is replacing annual evaluations and rankings.
