Last Tuesday, California SB 999 was rejected by the Assembly Business and Professions Committee by a vote of 3 Ayes and 14 Noes. Prior to the vote, Dr. Kari William, the chair of California’s Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, and Susan Cabral-Ebert, president of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 706 (which represents more than 2,000 hair stylists and make-up artists in the entertainment industry), served as the principal witnesses against the bill, which would deregulate blow-drying, styling, shampoo and conditioning services in the Golden State. Fred Jones of the Professional Beauty Federation of California reported that more than a hundred people attended the hearing in opposition to the bill. While the bill is dead for the year, the deregulation of these practices is likely to be brought up during the scheduled Sunset Review of the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology next year. Special thanks to all the AACS members who traveled to the Capitol in Sacramento to attend the hearing. Click here to read the full State Relations Update from Brian Newman. Member Events
Maintaining engagement inside of our classrooms can be challenging to say the least. Especially when it comes to foundational information such as roller sets, basic haircutting or color theory, students can easily check out and miss essential concepts for their career as a hairdresser. The truth is, the content of the class is only part of how we maintain engagement...the context (or how we deliver the content) is what truly keeps our audience involved! At Sam Villa, we have studied how to elevate energy and foster deep engagement from the first moment of class all the way to the closing. In this class Education Director Andrew Carruthers will share our discoveries by modeling the process and offering you the tools to enrich your own classrooms in your own unique way. Presented by Andrew Carruthers and sponsored by Sam Villa. It’s not too late to attend the CEA & AMP Annual Convention. Register today. Members in the News

The nomination period for the October 2018 election of the AACS Board of Directors is now officially open. There will be three (3) School Member seats and one (1) Partner Member seat open for this election. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, July 20, 2018.
