What's Hot
The AACS Staff welcomed your 2018 Event Committee Chairs to our home office in Scottsdale, AZ this week for an intensive, two-day planning session for next year’s meetings and conferences. In a first for AACS, we met early to lay the groundwork for the year ahead, focusing on member needs, programming, logistics, and even possible locations for 2019! Thank you to these leaders for their service and dedication to producing our upcoming events:

Steven Dawson (Chair, School Leaders Summit)
Carol Woodard (Chair, CEA & AMP Annual Convention)
Mike Vanacore (Co-chair, School Leaders Summit)
Kathy Frank (Expo Hall Production)
Nancy Lease (Event Production)

I remember talking with an acquaintance a few years back who had recently graduated from college about how she envisioned her career progressing. Here’s how she broke down the steps:
1. Get a job.
2. Master that job.
3. Manage other people doing that job.
4. "Run sh*t" (her exact words).

I find that this is often how management is perceived by individual contributors (myself included before I became a manager). "Running sh*t" sounds pretty awesome, right?

Member Benefits
The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation and ISPA are making it easy for AACS member schools to help prospective students find their dream job! Launched in October at the annual ISPA Expo, the nationwide Get Your Dream Job campaign provides AACS member schools with free downloadable assets inviting students to take advantage of ACE grants and rewarding opportunities in the professional spa sector.  Schools can download free Facebook and Instagram shares and cover images. Research conducted earlier this year by ISPA found approximately 33,000 vacant spa positions available for qualified individuals. Learn more about the campaign at www.getyourdreamjob.com.

GRC News
Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday your GRC were making our initial outreach to a new Administration and Congress urging them to take urgently needed steps to delay implementation of overly burdensome and punitive regulations and promoting our legislative priorities on Capitol Hill. Now, as the year comes to a close, we are in the thick of two separate Federal Negotiated Rule-making discussions seeking to revise the gainful employment (as a result of AACS’ successful litigation) and borrower defense to repayment regulations, and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce has completed markup of legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act and is preparing for floor consideration early next year!

Given all that is going on, we felt that it was important to host a webinar providing you with a brief into the past, the present, and our future. We have had a productive year, but the outcome of so many things still hands in the balance. Join with us for the latest on where everything stands, what your GRC is doing to prepare for the year ahead, and what you can do to get involved.

HB 1500, sponsored by Representative Shamed Dogan (R), would deregulate hair braiding and allow reciprocity (without examination) for a cosmetology, or instructor, licensee holding a valid license from another state, territory or the District of Columbia. Under the measure, hair braiders would be required to register with the Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, pay a fee not to exceed $25, and complete a self-test on infection control and diseases of the scalp.

HB 1400, sponsored by Representative Bruce DeGroot (R), would allow shampooing for compensation for individuals who do not hold a barbering or cosmetology license. It states that the "practices of cosmetology and barbering shall not include shampooing; except that, nothing in this section shall be construed as prohibiting a licensed cosmetologist or barber from performing the service of shampooing."

What do you do when a quiet student with low self-confidence finally raises their hand and answers a question you’ve asked the class ... and they’re wrong? I answer them the exact way I do when a student becomes extremely angry and starts voicing their frustrations. I use two small words that make a big impact—thank you.

"Thank you" is the best fire extinguisher in the classroom. It’s the one phrase that can calm someone down, build someone back up and make them feel important. Read more from Carol Woodard of Change is the new black.
