Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos:

Betsy DeVos is to be congratulated for this impressive achievement and applauded for accepting this important responsibility. The confirmation process is never easy, nor should it be. She will now take the helm of an agency charged with overseeing policies that affect practically every K-12 school, college, and university across the country. Just as importantly, she has the chance to prove to those who organized this malicious and personal campaign against her that they were wrong. Betsy has shown over the years that she is a powerful advocate for all children, and I have no doubt she will continue to be as our new Secretary of Education. Our committee stands ready and eager to work with Secretary DeVos to ensure all students have access to the high-quality education they need to succeed.
Washington State, Tennessee and Texas have bills introduced to deregulate various areas of beauty licensure. Rhode Island has a bill introduced that would reduce the number of hours for a hairdresser’s and cosmetician’s license from 1,500 hours to 1,200. You can read more about these and other state activities in this week’s State Relations Report.
