Art Therapy Today

AATA News
This June, in honor of Pride Month, AATA is hosting a virtual CE session to help art therapists better support LGBTQIA+ clients and create a more inclusive and affirming practice. Please join us June 17 at 7 p.m. ET for Queer Worldmaking in Art Therapy: Affirming Queer/Trans Lives Through Creative Practice.

This unique Continuing Education opportunity will explore the intersection of art therapy and queer worldmaking. Presenters Kachina Mooney, MA, LPC, ATR-BC; Sara Blevins-Ranes, ATR, LPC; and Nicholas Denson, MA, LCPC, LCADC, ATR-BC, NCC, will introduce foundational concepts of queer worldmaking and offer practical insights into how art therapists can incorporate these transformative ideas into their clinical practice.

The session will also examine the therapist’s role as ally, advocate, and activist—with the hope that everyone will walk away with a deeper understanding of the work to be done and how to do it—especially in light of the sweeping legislative changes impacting LGBTQIA+ lives.

We are so proud of our members, volunteers, sponsors, and donors who help us advance the art therapy profession and support mental health for clients and communities year round. Please download our 2024 Annual Impact Report here.

"In the hands of a well-trained therapist, there is no doubt the process of art-making is powerful, both clinically and personally. Art IS the inspiration. Art is our vehicle to bridge an understanding of the unthinkable, to express what sometimes cannot be expressed in any other way, whether to others or to ourselves. In the words of Georgia O’Keefe, 'I found I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.' Connecting with other art therapists is important in the journey, especially if one chooses to work in communities where there may be few, if any, fellow art therapists. AATA helps provide those connections."

"What excites me about my work is witnessing the profound, non-verbal power of art therapy across various populations, including those who are grieving, incarcerated youth, and individuals recovering from addiction. Art therapy enables the expression of emotions that might be too overwhelming or painful to verbalize, and it teaches new coping strategies and methods to manage stress, anger, and frustration."

“I used to teach in contemporary abstract art museums and my favorite thing included people who came in with an assumption about the art, but when they sat with it and learned more about it and the person who made it, their beliefs were altered. This is something I love to experience with art therapy clients as well.”

ADVOCACY UPDATES

Exciting news! Oregon’s governor just signed into law legislation that will allow the state to issue licenses to practice art therapy as a provisional licensed art therapist. In addition, the bill would also require the Oregon Health Authority (which administers Medicaid) and coordinated care organizations to reimburse services provided by LCATs. The legislation (HB3761) passed the state Senate on May 20 and was signed by the governor on May 28. Thank you to all our advocates who worked so hard to advocate for this bill!

Yesterday, the LCAT commercial insurance bill (A3319/S1001), which would include outpatient care provided by creative arts therapists in certain insurance policies, passed the Senate Finance Committee & is headed to the Senate floor for a vote!

If you are based in New York state, please take five minutes to call your State Senator and urge them to vote yes. (The New York LCAT Advocacy Coalition call script is here.)

Greetings from the Colorado Art Therapy Association's Government Action Committee Chair!

We are hard at work seeking to get our legislative body engaged in protecting the work of art therapists here in Colorado! While we have a bill proposal, we don't yet have a sponsor in our legislature to help us get things rolling. We would like to mobilize our members to the best of our ability, as well as get support from the Art Therapy community at large!

You can find us here on the Government Action Committee page of our new website. If you have questions or ideas, share them in our GAC Question Box.

And of course, if you want to share your support directly, you can do so through our Advocacy Pledge!
