Leadership
In our continuous journey to elevate healthcare value analysis to new heights, it becomes imperative to explore innovative approaches and integrate them into our practice. Recently, I was exposed to a groundbreaking book, "Polarity Intelligence," and how its principles can be profoundly applicable and transformative in the context of healthcare value analysis.
In an era defined by rapid advancements and shifting paradigms in healthcare, the role of strategic foresight and meticulous execution has never been more critical. As your Executive Director, I am continually inspired by the passion and dedication of our community. It is this collective commitment that drives the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP) to not just envision a future of enhanced healthcare value but to actively shape it.
Each event necessitates a committed team of individuals who are wholly dedicated to ensuring its success. As the 2024 Conference Planning Committee Chair, I wanted to give a personal shout-out to the team entrusted to make this year’s Annual Conference and Industry Partner Expo a resounding success. They have diligently selected this year’s conference theme: Value Vanguards- Pioneering Innovation and Excellence in Healthcare. The team was spot on in identifying the pioneering spirit of value analysis professionals who lead the way in transforming healthcare delivery. The Vanguards are at the forefront of action and are trailblazers in improving healthcare value.

Providers who have barely come to grips with putting data into their electronic health records (EHRs) are now tasked with pulling actionable insights out of them – and applying those learnings to complicated initiatives that directly impact reimbursement. For healthcare organizations that successfully integrate data-driven insights into their clinical and operational processes, the rewards can be huge.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule that will reduce ethylene oxide emissions from commercial sterilization facilities. The final rule will require 88 existing commercial sterilizers and two planned facilities nationwide to comply with stricter air pollution controls. 2023 represented the worst year for U.S. drug shortages, and the start of 2024 has not brought relief. Currently, 122 drug shortages are threatening medical treatment for patients. Many drugs in shortage have been widely used for decades, such as Amoxicillin and Adderall. Patients in desperate need have even called manufacturers to seek access.

Nonprofit hospitals created largely to serve the poor are adding concierge physician practices, charging patients annual membership fees of $2,000 or more for easier access to their doctors. It's a trend that began decades ago with physician practices. Thousands of doctors have shifted to the concierge model, in which they can increase their income while decreasing their patient load.

Karmin Strohfus, the lead nurse at a South Dakota jail, punched numbers into a phone like lives depended on it. She had in her care a pregnant woman with syphilis, a highly contagious, potentially fatal infection that can pass into the womb. Nearly every hospital is feeling the consequences of Change Healthcare’s cyberattack on their finances, patient care delivery, or both, according to reports from almost 1,000 hospitals compiled by the American Hospital Association (AHA).
