Leadership
In healthcare, Value Analysis Professionals play a crucial role in delivering quality care and improving patient outcomes. Value analysis professionals contribute to this by evaluating the cost-effectiveness and clinical outcomes of medical products, services, and processes. We assess the value of different options and help healthcare organizations make informed decisions to optimize patient care while managing costs. Using Value Analysis to embrace change in healthcare is particularly important due to the rapid advancements in medical technology, evolving patient needs, and changing regulatory requirements.
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, leadership is not just a role — it's a journey of growth, empowerment, and continuous learning. "Stepping into leadership" is about embracing opportunities to lead, regardless of your current position, and committing to ongoing personal and professional development. Professional development is a continuous journey that requires our constant attention.
I recently read in a leadership article that employees spend most of their work week on productive activities but less than 5% of their time training to be productive. I thought that was such an exciting concept. I immediately reflected on my work and use of Excel.
As your Treasurer, I am thrilled to share some exciting updates and insights about the recent developments within our association and the impact of our specialty on the broader healthcare sector. AHVAP continues to grow and evolve, driven by our commitment to advancing healthcare value analysis and driving positive change across the healthcare continuum.

Freight Waves
In 2020, hospitals around the world faced a shortage of N95 face masks and other medical essentials, adding to the chaos surrounding COVID-19. Two years later, the same hospitals confronted the opposite problem, as a surplus of supplies overwhelmed the system. These issues ignited the demand for health care supply chain solutions, triggering a wave of M&A.

Supply Chain Brain
The healthcare industry's digital transformation will have a profound impact on the supply chain in 2024. Adoption of modern technologies, such as cloud computing, will lead to increased automation and efficiency. The Associated Press
Alabama’s largest hospital paused in vitro fertilization treatments Wednesday as providers and patients across the state scrambled to assess the impact of a court ruling that said frozen embryos are the legal equivalent of children. The University of Alabama at Birmingham health system said in a statement that it must evaluate whether its patients or doctors could face criminal charges or punitive damages for undergoing IVF treatments.

Supply Chain Brain
The amount of money that hospitals waste on avoidable supply chain spending is staggering. Supply chains account for an estimated 25% of the cost of pharmaceuticals, and 40% of medical device budgets. And the money isn’t well spent: nearly a quarter of that amount is considered waste, to the tune of around $25.4 billion a year. The average hospital overspends on supply chain costs by around $12.1 million per year.

The New York Times
The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Health and Human Services said on Wednesday that they would examine the causes of generic drug shortages and the practices of “powerful middlemen” that are involved in the supply chain. The federal agencies’ inquiry is aimed at the group purchasing organizations and drug distributors that have been in the spotlight in recent months as drug shortages reached a 10-year peak.

Reuters
Americans are catching up on healthcare missed during the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend driven by heart procedures and outpatient orthopedic surgeries that likely won't soon slow, according to interviews with three hospital officials in major U.S. cities, but other factors may also be at play. U.S. health insurers have warned of high demand for medical services based on late 2023 usage, but have offered few details on the trend or how long it may continue driving up costs.
